High levels of fluoride in freshwater ecosystems are harmful for humans and animals, particularly, aquatic biota. In this paper, the concentrations of fluoride in arsenic-rich lotic ecosystems of the Pampa Plain, Argentina, were recorded. The relationship of fluoride with the concentration of arsenic was explored. Our results show that fluoride in these freshwater ecosystems ranged from 0.15 to 1.65 mg L(-1). Concentrations of fluoride were highly and significantly (r=0.71; p=0.001) correlated with arsenic.

c exposure to geogenic fluoride and arsenic iChronic exposure to geogenic fluoride and arsenic in groundwater has a deleterious influence on the health of billions of people globally. The health status of residents impacted by connected diseases is urgently needed. A twelve-year study was carried out to identify the spatial distribution pattern of high fluoride/arsenic groundwater in an arid/semi-arid area and to estimate the population exposed to related disease.

Arsenic-rich non-ferrous smelter wastewater has the potential to cause harm to the environment and human health. The use of mineralizer modified and tailored scorodite crystals, a secondary As-bearing mineral, is considered to be the most promising strategy for arsenic stabilization. In this work, firstly, the mechanisms influencing the scorodite crystal characteristics for arsenic stabilization were investigated, and the results indicated that the scorodite stability was greatly influenced by the scorodite crystal shape and particle size.

Concentrations of arsenic and fluoride above Mexican drinking water standards have been detected in aquifers of various areas of Mexico. This contamination has been found to be mainly caused by natural sources. However, the specific processes releasing these toxic elements into groundwater have been determined in a few zones only.
