In this paper, we investigated the effect of light driving force induced surface deformation on azobenzene-containing polymers. The surface deformation is attributed to light-induced mass migration inside the polymers. Circular cap arrays are firstly fabricated by high power laser ablation via polarization controlled three-beam interference. The circular caps are subsequently exposed to polarization controlled two-beam interfering field. The results illuminate that when the interfering laser beams are both set to P polarization, the circular caps are deformed. While the laser beams are of other interfering modes like (S, S) and (+45° , -45°), the caps are seldom deformed. The circular caps are also exposed to single intensity-homogeneous linearly polarized laser beam. The deformation of the caps keeps the same direction as the irradiating polarization. A model based on the focusing effect of the circular caps is addressed to explain the origin of the light driving force for mass migration in azopolymers. The all-optical approach for the production of deformed caps can be used to generate aspherical lens, which may be applied to many domains.

Opportunities and Challenges of a Cap-and-Trade System for Plastics.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Wageningen University and Research, Hydrology and Environmental Hydraulics Group, 6700 AA Wageningen, The Netherlands.

Recently, the rapid increase in global plastics production has caused various ecological and economic issues, worsened by poor material and waste management. Among the market-based instruments that could help mitigate the environmental impacts of plastics throughout their life-cycle, we evaluate the advantages and limitations of incorporating a cap-and-trade (CAT) system into future policy mixes. Our aim is to inspire further investigation of CAT's feasibility rather than presenting it as the ultimate solution.

Eccentric planets may spend a significant portion of their orbits at large distances from their host stars, where low temperatures can cause atmospheric CO to condense out onto the surface, similar to the polar ice caps on Mars. The radiative effects on the climates of these planets throughout their orbits would depend on the wavelength-dependent albedo of surface CO ice that may accumulate at or near apoastron and vary according to the spectral energy distribution of the host star. To explore these possible effects, we incorporated a CO ice-albedo parameterization into a one-dimensional energy balance climate model.

A novel structural motif for luminescent chiral crystalline molecular rotors with chiroptical properties correlated with the rotational motion in crystalline media is presented. This scaffold incorporates bulky chiral caps consisting of a homochiral binaphthyl moiety with a triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) group into triaryltriazine, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Variable-temperature solid-state H NMR studies revealed a 4-fold rotation of the phenylenes occurred in the rotor crystal between 263 and 333 K, while a steric rotor analogue shows no rotational motion.

We developed phosphorylation reagents with a nitrobenzyl hydrophobic tag and used them for 5'-phosphorylation of chemically or transcriptionally synthesized RNA. The capability of hydrophobic tags to synthesize 5'-monophosphorylated RNA was evaluated based on the yield of the desired oligonucleotides, stability of protecting groups during cleavage/deprotection, separation ability in reverse-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC), and deprotection efficiency after RP-HPLC purification. The results showed that a nitrobenzyl derivative with a tert-butyl group at the benzyl position was most suitable for RNA 5'-phosphorylation.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of endogenous noncoding RNAs characterized by their lack of 5' caps and 3' poly(A) tails. These molecules have garnered substantial attention from the scientific community. A wide range of circRNA types has been found to be expressed in various tissues of the human body, exhibiting unique characteristics such as high abundance, remarkable stability, and tissue-specific expression patterns.
