Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is widespread and mostly causes asymptomatic infections in immunocompetent hosts, but it may lead to severe and life-threatening diseases in immunocompromised individuals, such as transplant patients and congenitally infected children, representing a significant public health concern. Although there are no licensed CMV vaccines, the development of a CMV vaccine is considered a high priority due to its potential to reduce the burden associated with CMV-related complications, and several approaches are under investigation. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on various CMV vaccines currently under clinical development.

Purpose: Advances in therapeutic care are leading to an increase in the number of patients living with overt immunosuppression. These patients are at risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and disease that can lead to or develop during ICU admission. Congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV) is a frequent cause of non-hereditary sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and developmental disabilities. The contribution of cCMV to childhood hearing loss has been estimated to be about 25% of all hearing loss in children at 4 years of age. Although the vestibular insufficiency (VI) in cCMV has not been well-characterized and therefore, underestimated, recent studies suggest that VI is also frequent in children with cCMV and can lead to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.
