Although the hypotriglyceridemic effect of large doses of n-3 fatty acids (n-3 FAs) is well established, the effects of prolonged use of very low doses on lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins have not been clearly defined. This investigation compares the relative effects of very low, clinically practical doses of n-3 FAs on lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins in hypertriglyceridemic subjects. Ten subjects received 2.2 g n-3 FAs/d (group 1), seven received 1.1 g n-3 FAs/d (group 2), and eight received olive oil (group 3, placebo control) for 20-wk treatment period. In group 1, both low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and LDL-apolipoprotein B concentrations increased significantly from baseline values (28% and 23%, respectively; p less than 0.05) after treatment. Compared with the placebo group, the increase in LDL apolipoprotein B in both fish oil groups was statistically and clinically significant (p less than 0.05). Only minor changes in plasma triglyceride concentrations occurred. The data suggest that very low doses of n-3 FAs may cause potentially adverse increases in LDL-C and LDL-apolipoprotein B concentrations.

Background: Triacylglycerol (TAG) plasma excursions after a high-fat meal are blunted after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), but underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We studied TAG absorption and metabolism in 12 RYGB-operated individuals and 12 unoperated controls (CON) matched on sex, age, and BMI.
Methods: Participants followed a 7-day controlled diet and on day 4 underwent H-MR Spectroscopy of liver TAG and a high-fat liquid meal with oral and intravenous labeled stable isotope metabolites, subcutaneous abdominal fat biopsies, and indirect calorimetry.

For decades, studies have tried to identify the cholesterol marker that best reflects risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease(ASCVD). Comparing low-density-lipoprotein(LDL) cholesterol, non-high-density-lipoprotein(non-HDL) cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B(apoB) as ASCVD risk markers has been challenged by high correlation between them. Thus, discordance analyses, directly addressing disagreements between the cholesterol markers, have emerged.

In mammals, tissues other than liver and intestine are known to possess functional MTTP (microsomal triglyceride transfer protein) and apoB (apolipoprotein B) capable of VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein) assembly. Birds are oviparous and possess unique capabilities in lipid biology to accommodate yolk formation through massive deposition of hepatically assembled yolk-targeted VLDLy into ovarian follicles. Following identifications of MTTP and ApoB expression within chicken ovarian stroma, granulosa, theca, and epithelial cells of various classes of follicles, we sought to define the functionality of ovarian MTTP and ApoB in VLDL assembly.
