The first experiment to create germfree animals was done by NUTTALL and THIERFELDER in 1985. Later on, KUSTER (1912) published an apparatus which became the prototype for all following isolators. Another system was developed by SCHOTTELIUS in 1899, which became the prototype of the so-called "clean-room principle".
