A parallel array of isolated metal nanowires is expected to be hydrophilic. We show, however, that a clustering of such nanowires brought about by vacuum drying produces a 'dual-scale roughness' and confers a strongly hydrophobic property to the surface. The mean size of the nanowire clusters as well as the contact angle are both found to be related to the wire length, and the critical wire length above which the surface becomes hydrophobic is ≈10 µm. Surface roughness is generally known to enhance water-repellent properties, but this is the first report of roughness-induced hydrophobicity on a bare (uncoated) metallic surface.

A widespread and ancient bacterial machinery assembles cytochrome OmcS nanowires essential for extracellular electron transfer.

Microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET) drives various globally important environmental phenomena and has biotechnology applications. Diverse prokaryotes have been proposed to perform EET via surface-displayed "nanowires" composed of multi-heme cytochromes. However, the mechanism that enables only a few cytochromes to polymerize into nanowires is unclear.

A General Strategy for Controllable Preparation of Nano-CaCO.

Langmuir

State Key Laboratory of Organic-Inorganic Composites, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, China.

Controllable preparation of inorganic nanomaterials with specific morphology and structure is very important for their applications in various fields. Herein, a general strategy was proposed to controllably synthesize nano-CaCO via a water-in-oil microemulsion method in the rotating packed bed reactor. By tuning key parameters, nano-CaCO with four primarily analyzed morphologies, including spherical, spindle-like, clustered, or linear formations, can be selectively obtained.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) recently emerged as a life-threatening global pandemic that has ravaged millions of lives. The affected patients are known to frequently register numerous comorbidities induced by COVID-19 such as diabetes, asthma, cardiac arrest, hypertension, and neurodegenerative diseases, to name a few. The expensiveness and probability of false negative results of conventional screening tests often delay timely diagnosis and treatment.

Electrochemical deposition of Ni on arrays of GaAs nanowires with n-type channels.

Nanotechnology

January 2025

Laboratory of micro- and nanoelectronics, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University 'LETI', Prof. Popova st. 5, 197022 St.Petersburg, Russia.

The processes of electrochemical deposition of Ni on vertically aligned GaAs nanowires (NWs) grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) using Au as a growth catalyst on n-type Si(111) substrates were studied. Based on the results of electrochemical deposition, it was concluded that during the MBE synthesis of NWs the self-induced formation of conductive channels can occur inside NWs, thereby forming quasi core-shell NWs. Depending on the length of the channel compare to the NW heights and the parameters of electrochemical deposition, the different hybrid metal-semiconductor nanostructures, such as Ni nanoparticles on GaAs NW side walls, Ni clusters on top ends of GaAs NWs, core-shell GaAs/Ni NWs, were obtained.

Unraveling the Growth Mechanism of Chiral Inorganic Nanocrystals via High-Resolution Electron Microscopy.

School of Physical Science and Technology & Shanghai Key Laboratory of High-Resolution Electron Microscopy, ShanghaiTech University, Shanghai 201210, China.

Chiral inorganic nanomaterials have attracted broad interest due to their intriguing chirality-dependent performances. However, there is a lack of experimental studies and atomic-level evidence on their growth mechanism. Herein, high-crystalline chiral tellurium nanowires were synthesized in an alkali solution by using tellurium oxide as an inorganic source and hydrazine hydrate as a reductant.
