Published: August 2013

Intracortical chondromyxoid fibroma is an extremely rare benign neoplasm of cartilaginous origin that usually occurs as an eccentric lesion at the medullar metaphyseal region of long bones. We report the clinicoradiologic aspect of a new case located in the metaphyseal region of the upper tibia and discuss about the differential diagnosis.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare bone tumor of cartilaginous origin, representing less than 1% of all bone tumors. It preferentially arises in the eccentric location of the metaphysis of a long tubular bone. Juxtacortical locations are reported infrequently in the long bones and even more rarely in short tubular bones, with only three cases documented.

Intracortical chondromyxoid fibroma of humerus.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8655, Japan.

The clinicoradiologic and pathologic aspects of an intracortical, diaphyseal chondromyxoid fibroma of the humerus are reported. Because of the location of the lesion, the possibility of chondromyxoid fibroma was not considered radiologically. The diagnosis was made only after histologic examination of tissue obtained via an open biopsy, which led to the appropriate treatment, surgical curettage.
