Objective: To investigate the regulatory effect of jianpi jiedu Recipe (JJR) on the microvessel density (MVD) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in long-term infection of Helicobacter pylori induced gastric cancer of C57BL/6 mice, thus providing experimental bases for its treatment of the H. pylori correlated gastropathy.

Methods: C57BL/6 mouse gastric cancer model induced by H. pylori infection was established by gastrogavage of H. pylori standard strain SS1. Mice were divided into the control group, the model group, low dose JJR group, and the high dose JJR group, 40 in each group. Mice were sacrificed after 72-week medication. Changes of the gastric mucosa MVD of mice in each group were detected by immunohistochemical method. Expressions of COX-2 mRNA and protein were detected by Real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical method.

Results: The occurrence rate of gastric cancer in the control group, the model group, the low dose JJR group, and the high dose JJR group was 0, 22.2%, 11.1%, and 10.0%, respectively. The gastric mucosa MVD (number/cm2) of mice in each group was 2.50 +/- 1.54, 18.56 +/- 2.62, 14.61 +/- 3.60, and 7.39 +/- 1.75, respectively. The gastric mucosa MVD in the model group increased more obviously than that in the control group (P < 0.01). The gastric mucosa MVD significantly decreased in the low dose JJR group and the high dose JJR group (P < 0.01). Expressions of COX-2 mRNA and protein in the model group increased more obviously than those in the control group (P < 0.01). Low dose JJR and high dose JJR could decrease their expressions in a dose dependent manner.

Conclusions: H. pylori infection could increase the gastric mucosa MVD of C57BL/6 mice and promote COX-2 expressions, which might play a promoting effect in the incidence of H. pylori induced gastric cancer. JJR could decrease the gastric mucosa MVD and inhibit COX-2 expressions, which might be one of its important mechanisms of preventing and treating gastric cancer.

Objective: The aim of this special report is to describe the 6th edition of "The Guidelines for the Management of Pulmonary Nodules Detected by Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening ".

Methods: Since the 5th edition six years ago, a review of the literature and consideration of consistency with new evidence led to the revision of the 6th edition.

Results: The main revisions in the 6th edition can be summarized as follows: 1) addition of the section "Recommendations for Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening in Japan"; 2) change in the recommended solid component diameter, and follow-up interval for nodules with a total mean diameter of less than 15 mm and a solid component diameter of less than 8 mm; 3) replacement of the recommended case images; and 4) introduction of the criteria of the Lung Cancer CT Screening Certification Organization.

External validation of the performance of commercially available deep-learning-based lung nodule detection on low-dose CT images for lung cancer screening in Japan.

Jpn J Radiol

November 2024

Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Science, Hiroshima University, 1-2-3 Kasumi, Minamiku, Hiroshima, 734-8551, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the effectiveness of a deep-learning algorithm for detecting lung nodules in low-dose CT images from lung cancer screenings in Japan.
  • The algorithm achieved a high sensitivity of 96.0% for detecting lung nodules, meaning it accurately identified most of them, but had a low positive predictive value (PPV) of 24.2%, indicating many false positives.
  • Despite its strong performance in sensitivity, the algorithm's tendency to produce a high number of false positives poses a significant challenge for its use in clinical settings.

Article Synopsis
  • Inborn metabolic diseases in adults are often overlooked, particularly in routine diagnostics where suspicion is low.
  • A young patient initially diagnosed with anxiety disorder was ultimately found to have Hartnup disease after a series of unsuccessful treatments and extensive testing, which included whole-exome sequencing.
  • Following diagnosis, dietary changes and niacin supplementation led to significant improvements in the patient's condition, emphasizing the need for metabolic assessments in challenging neuropsychiatric cases.

Cranial and spinal computed tomography (CT) angiography with photon-counting detector CT: comparison with angiographic and operative findings.

Jpn J Radiol

September 2024

Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, 2-5-1 Shikata-cho, Kita-ku, Okayama, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Photon-counting detector (PCD) CT has notable advantages over energy-integrating detector (EID) CT, including reduced radiation dose, enhanced spatial resolution, and fewer artifacts.
  • PCD CT angiography (CTA) is valuable for assessing brain tumors and spinal vascular conditions, providing critical information for preoperative planning and risk evaluation.
  • This review discusses the potential of PCD-CTA to serve as a less invasive alternative to selective angiography, emphasizing its accuracy in clinical applications related to cranial and spinal issues.
