We discuss the paper recently published in Rheumatology Internationa. This article reflects on the prevalence of autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARD) during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023) and compares the same with the pre-pandemic period (2016-2019). We assume that SARS-CoV-2 triggers ARD.

The elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) associated with inflammatory rheumatic diseases has long been recognized. Patients with established rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have a higher mortality rate compared to the general population due to abnormal platelet activation. Thymidine phosphorylase (TYMP) plays a crucial role in platelet activation and thrombosis, following bridging the link between RA and CVD.

Rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) is an increasingly recognized extra-articular manifestations (EAMs) in the RA, with highly morbidity and mortality. The identification of key molecules involved in RA-ILD has a high requirement in clinic, and the role of their transcriptional regulation in the etiology of RA-ILD is great significant for investigation. In this study, we collected the whole peripheral blood samples of RA-ILD and RA only patients to bulk RNA-sequence.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) associated with rheumatoid arthritis or with connective tissue diseases such as systemic sclerosis can be collectively named systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease-associated ILDs (SARD-ILDs) or rheumatic musculoskeletal disorder-associated ILDs. SARD-ILDs result in substantial morbidity and mortality, and there is a high medical need for effective therapies that target both fibrotic and inflammatory pathways in SARD-ILD. Phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) hydrolyses cyclic AMP, which regulates multiple pathways involved in inflammatory processes.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune inflammatory disorder. Diet is recognized as a modifiable factor that may influence inflammation and potentially accelerate RA progression. Nevertheless, the effects of diverse dietary patterns and their combined impact on RA progression and long-term mortality remain inadequately understood.
