We present a phase fluctuation calibration method for polarization-sensitive swept-source optical coherence tomography (PS-SS-OCT) using continuous polarization modulation. The method uses a low-voltage broadband polarization modulator driven by a synchronized sinusoidal burst waveform rather than an asynchronous waveform, together with the removal of the global phases of the measured Jones matrices by the use of matrix normalization. This makes it possible to average the measured Jones matrices to remove the artifact due to the speckle noise of the signal in the sample without introducing auxiliary optical components into the sample arm. This method was validated on measurements of an equine tendon sample by the PS-SS-OCT system.

In the subauroral zone at the boundary of the auroral oval in the evening and night hours during geomagnetic disturbances, a narrow (about 1°-2°) and extended structure (several hours in longitude) is formed. It is known as a polarization jet (PJ) or the subauroral ion drift (SAID). The PJ/SAID is a fast westward ion drift and is one of the main signatures of a geomagnetic disturbance in the subauroral ionosphere at the altitudes of the F-layer, when the geomagnetic AE index reaches more than 500 nT.

Dual opposing quadrature-PT symmetry.

iScience

January 2025

Department of Electrical and Computering Engineering, Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY 13902, USA.

Our recent research on type-I quadrature parity-time (PT) symmetry, utilizing an open twin-beam system, not only enables observing genuine quantum photonic PT symmetry amid phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) and loss in the presence of Langevin noise but also reveals an additional classical-to-quantum (C2Q) transition in noise fluctuations. In contrast to the previous setup, our exploration of an alternative system assuming no loss involves a type-II PSA-only scheme. This scheme facilitates dual opposing quadrature-PT symmetry, offering a comprehensive and complementary comprehension of C2Q transitions and PT-enhanced quantum sensing with optimal performance in the symmetry unbroken region.

Key Laboratory of Meat Processing and Quality Control, Ministry of Education China, Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center of Meat Production and Processing, Quality and Safety Control, College of Food Science and Technology, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing 210095, China. Electronic address:

The bioactive peptides in Jinhua ham could be released into the broth during cooking. After comparing peptide antibacterial activity from Jinhua ham broth with varying cooking durations, the cooking-2-h broths were selected for further analysis using cation-exchange and reverse-phase-liquid chromatography. The purified peptide sequences were subsequently synthesized and tested for their antibacterial activity.

An Improved Speed Sensing Method for Drive Control.

Sensors (Basel)

January 2025

Departamento de Ingeniería Electrónica, Universidad de Sevilla, 41092 Seville, Spain.

Variable-speed electrical drive control typically relies upon a two-loop scheme, one for torque/speed and another for stator current control. In modern drive control methods, the actual mechanical speed is needed for both loops. In practical applications, the speed is often acquired by incremental rotary encoders.
