Emerging contaminants in estuarine sediments, such as bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO), pose ecotoxicological risks that may be exacerbated by co-contamination. This study investigated the impacts of DEHP, nTiO, and their combinations at environmentally relevant concentrations (1, 10, and 100 μg/g) on the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans in estuarine-like sediment (14.25‰ salinity).

Neurodegenerative diseases are often characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction. In Alzheimer's disease, abnormal tau phosphorylation disrupts mitophagy, a quality control process through which damaged organelles are selectively removed from the mitochondrial network. The precise mechanism through which this occurs remains unclear.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common aging-associated neurodegenerative dementia disorder, is defined by the presence of amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau aggregates in the brain. However, more than half of patients also exhibit aggregates of the protein TDP-43 as a secondary pathology. Clinically, AD patients with secondary TDP-43 pathology have more severe cognitive impairment, more rapid cognitive decline, worse brain atrophy, and a shorter disease course.

Developmental toxicity (DevTox) tests evaluate the adverse effects of chemical exposures on an organism's development. Although current testing primarily relies on large mammalian models, the emergence of new approach methodologies (NAMs) is encouraging industries and regulatory agencies to evaluate novel assays. C.

The mechanisms underlying the impact of probiotic supplementation on health remain largely elusive. While previous studies primarily focus on the discovery of novel bioactive bacteria and alterations in the microbiome environment to explain potential probiotic effects, our research delves into the role of living Lactiplantibacillus (formerly known as Lactobacillus) and their conditioned media, highlighting that only the former, not dead bacteria, enhance the healthspan of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans).
