Superfine powders of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) have been prepared by means of an emulsion polymerization method. These have been used as templates in the synthesis of tetragonal phase mesoporous zirconia by the sol-gel method, using zirconium oxychloride and oxalic acid as raw materials. The products have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, N2adsorption-desorption isotherms, and pore size distribution. The results indicate that the average pore size was found to be 3.7 nm.

A novel electrochemical aptasensor based on bimetallic zirconium and copper oxides embedded within mesoporous carbon (denoted as ZrOCuO@mC) was constructed to detect miRNA. The porous ZrOCuO@mC was created through the pyrolysis of bimetallic zirconium/copper-based metal-organic framework (ZrCu-MOF). The substantial surface area and high porosity of ZrOCuO@mC nanocomposite along with its robust affinity toward aptamer strands, facilitated the effective anchoring of aptamer strands on the ZrOCuO@mC-modified electrode surface.

Establishing a persistent lubrication mechanism and a durable tribo-film on contact surfaces is identified as crucial for improving the tribology and vibration characteristics of polymer materials under water-lubricated conditions. This study focuses on enhancing tribological performance and reducing frictional vibrations in ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) through the incorporation of mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) nanoparticles. In the experiments, MPDA nanoparticles were synthesized and blended with UHMWPE to create UHMWPE/MPDA composites.

Hierarchically structured supraparticles can be produced by drying droplets of colloidal suspensions. Using binary suspensions provides degrees of structural and functional control beyond those possible for single components, while remaining tractable for fundamental mechanistic studies. Here, we implement evaporative co-assembly of two distinct particle types - 'large' polystyrene microparticles and 'small' inorganic oxide nanoparticles (silica, titania, zirconia, or ceria) - dried on superhydrophobic surfaces to produce bowl-shaped supraparticles.

Ion transport inside nanopores is affected by the physicochemical interactions between the ions and the internal pore wall, offering novel opportunities useful for nanopore-based applications. Here we demonstrate that the transport of Fe(CN) is influenced by the pore wall-ion interactions in sub-10 nm pore channels of a mesoporous zirconia film (MZF) formed on an electrode based on cyclic voltammetric (CV) studies. At pH lower than the point of zero charge of zirconia, the pore wall is positively charged, enabling it to exert attractive interaction with the negatively charged analyte ions.

Testing the catalytic performance for the catalytic pyrolysis of plastic waste is hampered by mass transfer limitations induced by a size mismatch between the catalyst's pores and the bulky polymer molecules. To investigate this aspect, the catalytic behaviour of a series of microporous and mesoporous materials was assessed in the catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene (PE). More specifically, a mesoporous material, namely sulfated zirconia (Zr(SO)) on SBA-15, was synthesized to increase the pore accessibility, which reduces mass transfer limitations and thereby enables to better assess the effect of active site density on catalyst activity.
