Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Pancreatic Tissue Sampling: Lesion Assessment, Needles, and Techniques.

Medicina (Kaunas)

December 2024

Department of Medicine, Diagnostic and Interventional Endoscopy of the Pancreas, The Pancreas Institute, University Hospital of Verona, 37134 Verona, Italy.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided tissue sampling includes the techniques of fine needle aspiration (FNA) and fine needle biopsy (FNB), and both procedures have revolutionized specimen collection from the gastrointestinal tract, especially from remote/inaccessible organs. EUS-FNB has replaced FNA as the procedure of choice for tissue acquisition in solid pancreatic lesions (SPLs) across various society guidelines. FNB specimens provide a larger histological tissue core (preserving tissue architecture) with fewer needle passes, and this is extremely relevant in today's era of precision and personalized molecular medicine.

: Drawing upon over twenty years of clinical experience in endoscopic and endosonographic procedures, along with comprehensive literature research, we present an overview on EUS-guided pancreatography and pancreatic duct drainage (EUS-PD) as an alternative approach, encompassing indications, procedural methods, and outcomes, including complications and the success rate. Narrative review. (corner points): EUS-PD is indicated for cases, for which conventional methods are ineffective due to altered abdominal anatomy of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, such as congenital or postoperative conditions that prevent access to the papilla or pancreatoenteric anastomosis.

Comparative diagnostic performance of imaging modalities in chronic pancreatitis: a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.

BMC Med Imaging

January 2025

Department of Pharmacy, Taihe Hospital, Hubei Provincial Clinical Research Center for Umbilical Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cells, Hubei University of Medicine, Shiyan, Hubei, 442000, China.

Purpose: We aimed to perform a Bayesian network meta-analysis to assess the comparative diagnostic performance of different imaging modalities in chronic pancreatitis(CP).

Methods: The PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant publications until March 2024. All studies evaluating the head-to-head diagnostic performance of imaging modalities in CP were included.

Tracheal schwannomas are exceedingly rare, accounting for a minute fraction of primary tracheal tumors. They are classified into intraluminal and mixed types, with treatment strategies varying significantly between these subtypes. While thorax tomography is usually sufficient to distinguish intraluminal and mixed type, endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) can also be used in cases where the distinction cannot be made clearly with tomography.

Artificial intelligence in pancreaticobiliary endoscopy: Current applications and future directions.

J Dig Dis

December 2024

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.

Pancreaticobiliary endoscopy is an essential tool for diagnosing and treating pancreaticobiliary diseases. However, it does not fully meet clinical needs, which presents challenges such as significant difficulty in operation and risks of missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has enhanced the diagnostic and treatment efficiency and quality of pancreaticobiliary endoscopy.
