HLA-G antigens are non-classical HLA-class I anti-inflammatory molecules. Since styrene exposure has been suggested to induce immune alteration, we analyzed plasma levels and "in vitro" peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) production of soluble HLA-G (sHLA-G) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) molecules after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, in styrene exposed workers and healthy subjects. Exposed workers showed reduced plasma levels of sHLA-G and IL-10 in comparison to healthy controls. Similarly, lower levels of sHLA-G and IL-10 molecules were observed in PBMC culture supernatants after LPS activation. These data propose styrene exposure as a mediator of impaired sHLA-G production.

Background: Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses have caused widespread infections in dairy cows and poultry in the United States, with sporadic human cases. We describe characteristics of human A(H5N1) cases identified from March through October 2024 in the United States.

Pesticide use poses major public health risks and raises environmental concerns globally. We synthesize three decades of stated preferences and experimental approaches that estimate the social costs of pesticide use through consumer and farmer willingness-to-pay (WTP) to prevent or reduce the risks involved. We contribute to the existing literature by demonstrating that the social costs of pesticides vary significantly depending on risk types and levels, where they occur, who is exposed and their risk aversion.

Purpose: Exposure to traumatic events may lead to the development of Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) within the first month post-trauma in some individuals, while others may not exhibit ASD symptoms. ASD was introduced as a potential early indicator to identify those at higher risk of developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), however, PTSD can occur in some individuals even without prior ASD. Assessing ASD post-trauma can assist in identifying those who would most benefit from intervention to prevent later PTSD, yet the predictive power of ASD varies across studies, with intensity of ASD symptoms and subthreshold PTSD often less considered.
