As part of the new EUVAC.NET contract with ECDC (Pertussis Work Area 4), a collaborative study was organised in July-December 2010. Two well-defined reference preparations with high and low IgG antibodies to pertussis toxin (PT), were sent to participants. The purposes of this study were to assess current laboratory performance of serological assays for pertussis; to compare in-house reference preparations that are currently used by participants for the serological assay; and to identify needs for standardisation of the serological assay. Reference Laboratories in Europe currently performing serological assays for the diagnosis of pertussis by measuring antibody to PT, were invited to participate in the study. A total of 17 laboratories/countries participated in this study. Results were reported from a total of 9 participants who used in-house ELISA assays and 10 participants who used commercial kits. All participants using in-house ELISA with purified PT coating plates distinguished the 2 preparations and gave results that were comparable to the expected values. A total of 6 commercial kits included in the study showed different results. The kits coated with mixture antigens did not appear to be able to give results that were correlated to the WHO reference preparations.

We have successfully prepared a significant number of nanowires from non-toxic silicon sources. Compared to the SiO silicon source used in most other articles, our preparation method is much safer. It provides a simple and harmless new preparation method for the preparation of silicon nanowires.

Here, we present a protocol for guiding tissue preparation and flow cytometric analysis in subcutaneous murine tumor models and secondary lymphoid organs. We describe steps for dissociating tumors, spleens, and lymph nodes to obtain single-cell suspensions. We then detail procedures for immune cell staining and analysis and gating strategies including the use of fluorescence-minus-one controls (FMOs).

Carbon coating on SiO surface is crucial for enhancing initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and cycling performance in batteries, while also buffering volume expansion. Despite its market prevalence, the effects of the carbon layer's quality and structure on the electrochemical properties of SiO remain underexplored. This study compares carbon layers produced via gas-phase and solid-phase coating methods, introducing an innovative technique that sequentially uses two gases to develop a low-impedance hybrid carbon structure.

Background: The term "danger signs" refers to any symptoms or indicators that suggest a pregnant woman may be at risk during pregnancy. Mothers are often burdened with responsibilities, and the majority of them do not even receive treatment for potential complications, which can ultimately lead to the loss of their lives. This situation highlights the barriers that prevent them from being properly prepared for potential risks.

Pheophytin-a derivatives possessing plastoquinone and phylloquinone analogs in the peripheral 3-substituent were prepared by Friedel-Crafts reactions of a 3-hydroxymethyl-chlorin as one of the chlorophyll-a derivatives with benzo- and naphthohydroquinones, respectively, and successive oxidation of the 1,4-dihydroxy-aryl groups in the resulting dehydration products. The 3-quinonylmethyl-chlorins exhibited ultraviolet-visible absorption and circular dichroism spectra in acetonitrile, which were composed of those of the starting 3-hydroxymethyl-chlorin and the corresponding methylated benzo- and naphthoquinones. No intramolecular interaction between the chlorin and quinone π-systems was observed in the solution owing to the methylene spacer.
