Published: January 2012

In the post-genomic era, glycomics (the functional study of carbohydrates in living organisms) has come into the forefront of biological research because the interactions of glycoconjugates with proteins not only occur widely in biological processes of cells but also initiate infection of host cells by bacteria and viruses. Microarrays have been reportedly successful in carbohydrate-protein interaction as well as cellular surface glycan profiling. This review provides an overview of recent progress in the development of microarray-based techniques for glycomic studies. The fabrication, application and challenge/bottleneck of glycan/lectin microarrays have been summarized and discussed.

On-Chip DNA Assembly via Dielectrophoresis.

Micromachines (Basel)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Radio Frequency Heterogeneous Integration, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, China.

On-chip gene synthesis has the potential to improve the synthesis throughput and reduce the cost exponentially. While there exist several microarray-based oligo synthesis technologies, on-chip gene assembly has yet to be demonstrated. This work introduces a novel on-chip DNA assembly method via dielectrophoresis (DEP) that can potentially be integrated with microarray-based oligo synthesis on the same chip.

Background: Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) is a significant burden globally, particularly in the Arabian Gulf region. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has experienced rising MRSA prevalence, with increasing diversity in the clonal complexes (CCs) identified. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its increased hospitalization rates and antibiotic use, may have further influenced MRSA's genetic evolution and epidemiology in the country.

Background: A subset of developmental disorders (DD) is characterized by disease-specific genome-wide methylation changes. These episignatures inform on the underlying pathogenic mechanisms and can be used to assess the pathogenicity of genomic variants as well as confirm clinical diagnoses. Currently, the detection of these episignature requires the use of indirect methylation profiling methodologies.

Co-occurrence of multiple mycotoxins is a growing global food safety concern due to their harmful effects on humans and animals. This study developed an eco-friendly sample preparation method and an innovative multiplex microarray-based lateral flow immunoassay, using a novel portable reader for on-site simultaneous determination of five regulated mycotoxins-aflatoxin B, T-2 toxin, zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, and fumonisin B in rice. The eco-friendly and ultrafast extraction procedure utilizes a bio-based solvent.

Lipid rafts are liquid-ordered domains in which specific enzymes and receptors are located. These membrane platforms play crucial roles in a variety of signaling pathways. Alterations in the lipid environment, such as those elicited by oxidative stress, can lead to important functional disruptions in membrane proteins.
