We report a patient with an erythrocyte autoantibody in whose serum a broadly reactive antibody was transiently replaced by a monospecific autoanti-Jka. On preoperation evaluation, a 49-year-old man, who had never been transfused, exhibited both a positive antibody screen and a positive direct antiglobulin test. Although a broadly reactive antibody had been present 2 years earlier, only anti-Jka was found in the serum on preoperative testing. In contrast, an acid eluate prepared from the patient's red cells at the time was reactive with all cells from a 10-cell panel--a finding consistent with the broadly reactive autoantibody noted earlier. Repeat testing of a sample obtained 1 week later revealed only a broadly reactive autoantibody in both serum and eluate. This patient is notable in two respects. He exhibited a rare autoantibody, monospecific anti-Jka, and the specificity of the autoantibody changed from broadly reactive when first detected to anti-Jka and then back to broadly reactive. Thus, antibodies directed against specific antigens, in the setting of autoimmune hemolytic anemia, may be part of the autoimmune process and not always alloantibodies.

SARS-CoV-2 continues to evolve, with new variants emerging that evade pre-existing immunity and limit the efficacy of existing vaccines. One approach towards developing superior, variant-proof vaccines is to engineer immunogens that preferentially elicit antibodies with broad cross-reactivity against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants by targeting conserved epitopes on spike. The inner and outer faces of the Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) are two such conserved regions targeted by antibodies that recognize diverse human and animal coronaviruses.

Pressure is mounting to minimize the carbon footprint of chemical industry while increasing its sustainability. An argument is made that working from Green Chemistry principles during discovery-based catalysis results in effective chemistry and circumvents a need to "rediscover" chemical reactivity under sustainable conditions. Examples of comparative success in selected examples of hydrophosphination catalysis in various degrees of development are provided to support two main ideas: 1) Starting from more sustainable practices in chemical discovery is inertia in methodology that should be overcome, and 2) Substantial challenges remain in catalysis for which sustainable solution would positively impact other areas of chemistry.

Consistent evidence has documented the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of externalizing psychopathology with personality and behavioral traits, suggesting the presence of a broad, underlying liability to externalizing. In one of the first studies of its kind, we use a large, representative sample of youth ( = 2,245 twins and their siblings) to evaluate the evidence of an externalizing spectrum model, which includes psychopathology, personality, and behavioral traits and spans normal and pathological variation. We examine evidence for the inclusion of 15 candidate traits, from the domains of general and pathological personality, temperament, and aggression, in a model that includes dimensions of common childhood externalizing psychopathology.

The gonococcal transferrin binding protein B (TbpB) is an attractive candidate vaccine antigen. Carbodiimides (R-N=C=N-R) are well-known intermediates for the preparation of a variety of N-containing compounds, including heterocycles and amide linkages. Be-cause of their high reactivity and easy availability, carbodiimides have been broadly used as building blocks in the synthesis of structurally complex and diverse heterocyclic com-pounds in multi-component reactions (MCRs). Recent advances in diversity-oriented syn-thesis with carbodiimide-based MCRs are discussed in this minireview and are classified into different sections based on the key transformation involved in the reactions, such as heteroannulation and nucleophilic addition reactions which containing metal-catalyzed re-actions, multi-component reactions, and catalyst-free reactions subsections.
