High-temperature fractional quantum Hall states.

Published: June 2011

We show that a suitable combination of geometric frustration, ferromagnetism, and spin-orbit interactions can give rise to nearly flatbands with a large band gap and nonzero Chern number. Partial filling of the flatband can give rise to fractional quantum Hall states at high temperatures (maybe even room temperature). While the identification of material candidates with suitable parameters remains open, our work indicates intriguing directions for exploration and synthesis.

Distributed vector representations are a key bridging point between connectionist and symbolic representations in cognition. It is unclear how uncertainty should be modelled in systems using such representations. In this paper we discuss how bundles of symbols in certain Vector Symbolic Architectures (VSAs) can be understood as defining an object that has a relationship to a probability distribution, and how statements in VSAs can be understood as being analogous to probabilistic statements.

Exciton spectra in disordered quantum wells.

We study the effects of disorder on the exciton spectra in quantum well (QW) semiconductor structures. We model the disorder by introducing the fractional Laplacian into the Schrödinger equations, which describe the exciton spectra of the above QW structures. We calculate the exciton binding energies in its ground state and a few low-lying excited states as a function of the GaAs QW size.

Susceptibility formulation of density matrix perturbation theory.

Density matrix perturbation theory based on recursive Fermi-operator expansions provides a computationally efficient framework for time-independent response calculations in quantum chemistry and materials science. From a perturbation in the Hamiltonian, we can calculate the first-order perturbation in the density matrix, which then gives us the linear response in the expectation values for some chosen set of observables. We present an alternative, dual formulation, where we instead calculate the static susceptibility of an observable, which then gives us the linear response in the expectation values for any number of different Hamiltonian perturbations.

Article Synopsis
  • The standard model for fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) effect typically assumes a flat and isolated Chern band, but this study questions that view by focusing on pentalayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride.
  • Through advanced calculations, researchers found that interaction effects produce a significant band gap, leading to stable FQAH states even without the moiré superlattice potential.
  • The findings suggest that the QAH insulator at filling ν=1 behaves like an interaction-driven topological Wigner crystal, inviting further exploration of topology and FQAH in systems with low moiré potential.

We show that topological flat minibands can be engineered in a class of narrow gap semiconductor films using only an external electrostatic superlattice potential. We demonstrate that, for realistic material parameters, these bands are capable of hosting correlated topological phases such as integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall states and composite Fermi liquid phases at zero magnetic field. Our results provide a path toward the realization of fractionalized topological states in a broad range of materials.
