A novel smart polymer responsive to CO2. | LitMetric

A novel smart polymer responsive to CO2.

Chem Commun (Camb)

Chengdu Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chengdu 610041, PR China.

Published: September 2011

An amidine-based polymer was prepared by combination of RAFT polymerization and "click" reaction, and the polymer undergoes a hydrophobic-hydrophilic transition upon the stimulus of CO(2).

With the increasing demand for sustainable and effective food preservation methods, the development of novel smart preservation materials has become a pressing need. A temperature-responsive smart nanofiber material with a shell-core structure, polyvinyl alcohol/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/polylactic acid/lemon essential oil (PPPL), was developed by incorporating lemon essential oil as a core-layer preservative and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) as a temperature-responsive shell layer. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the shell-core structure of the fibers.

Developing dietary formulations for aquaculture that meet nutritional requirements is essential to production, as nutrition is key for fish growth and health. However, novel dietary formulations may induce malnutrition, which is complex to evaluate and often requires animal sacrifice. Therefore, finding reliable non-lethal biomarkers to diagnose malnutrition in fish is important.

Neural networks trained by weight permutation are universal approximators.

Department of Applied Mathematics & Research Institute for Smart Energy, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Electronic address:

The universal approximation property is fundamental to the success of neural networks, and has traditionally been achieved by training networks without any constraints on their parameters. However, recent experimental research proposed a novel permutation-based training method, which exhibited a desired classification performance without modifying the exact weight values. In this paper, we provide a theoretical guarantee of this permutation training method by proving its ability to guide a ReLU network to approximate one-dimensional continuous functions.

A major challenge in capturing multi-segmental movements with unconnected inertial measurement units (IMUs) is synchronisation between IMUs. The aims of this study were to assess the reproducibility of desynchronisation rates between unconnected IMUs (Axivity, Ax6) commonly used in human movement studies and to determine the accuracy of predicted (corrected) clock differences under different conditions. In the first two experiments, we report that rates of desynchronisation between IMU pairs were linear, unique to each pair, and reproducible within and between sessions.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multifactorial autoimmune disease characterized with symmetrical progression of joint deformity that is often diagnosed at a chronic condition with other associated pathological conditions such as pericarditis, keratitis, pulmonary granuloma. Despite the understanding of RA pathophysiology in disease progression, current clinical treatment options such as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologics, steroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) provide only palliative therapy while causing adverse side effects such as off-target multi-organ toxicity and risk of infections. Further, available drug delivery strategies to treat RA pathogenicity does not successfully reach the site of action due to various barriers such as phagocytosis and first pass effect in addition to the disease complexity and unknown etiology, thereby leading to the development of irreversible joint dysfunction.
