In the title complex, [Cu(C(7)H(5)O(3))(2)(C(21)H(18)N(4)O)(2)]·2H(2)O, the Cu(II) atom is located on a centre of inversion and exists in a tetra-gonally distorted octahedral geometry with a CuN(4)O(2) chromophore. The intra-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond is highly strained due to the mol-ecular geometry and, as a result, is much shorter than expected. Inter-molecular C-H⋯O and C-H⋯O inter-actions are also observed.

The title compound, (CHNO)[CuCl(CHNO)]·2HO, was prepared by reacting Cu acetate dihydrate, solid 8-hy-droxy-quinoline (8-HQ), and solid pyridine-2,6-di-carb-oxy-lic acid (Hpydc), in a 1:1:1 molar ratio, in an aqueous solution of dilute hydro-chloric acid. The Cu atom exhibits a distorted CuONCl octa-hedral geometry, coordinating two oxygen atoms and one nitro-gen atom from the tridentate Hpydc ligand and three chloride atoms; the nitro-gen atom and one chloride atom occupy the axial positions with Cu-N and Cu-Cl bond lengths of 2.011 (2) Å and 2.

An efficient method for the synthesis of novel phenylazo-containing moieties is described. The derivatives of 5-(4-(phenyldiazenyl)phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole, substituted at position 2 of the heterocyclic scaffold with alkyl groups of different chain lengths, were prepared. The titled compounds were obtained using the appropriate 4-(5-alkyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)anilines, which were directed to diazotization and subsequently coupled to phenol, resorcinol, and ,-dimethylaniline.

The central copper atoms are hexa-coordinated by two nitro-gen atoms in the equatorial positions, two equatorial oxygen atoms of two carboxyl-ate substituents in position 3 and 5 of the 1,2,4-triazole ring, and two axial oxygen atoms of two water mol-ecules.
