Unlabelled: HIV is a pandemic infection with cases notified in almost all countries. The reported prevalence of symptoms in the head and neck is about 80%; otolaryngologists may be the first physician to see such patients. Oral manifestations are the most common, followed by neck and sinus manifestations. Otolaryngologic symptoms may be important signs of antiretroviral therapy failure. Symptoms are present in acute infections and advanced cases.

Objective: To describe new approaches in the past five years for the treatment of the most frequent otolaryngologic manifestations in HIV patients.

Methods: Systematic reviews and case series published in English and Portuguese from January 2002 to October 2007 including the most common otolaryngology manifestations were selected.

Conclusion: Otolaryngologic manifestations are common and ENT specialists must be prepared to identify such cases.

Identification of genetic mechanisms of non-isolated auditory neuropathy with various phenotypes in Chinese families.

Orphanet J Rare Dis

January 2025

Senior Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, The 6th Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital, Chinese PLA Medical School, Beijing, 100048, China.

Background: Non-isolated auditory neuropathy (AN), or syndromic AN, is marked by AN along with additional systemic manifestations. The diagnostic process is challenging due to its varied symptoms and overlap with other syndromes. This study focuses on two mitochondrial function-related genes which result in non-isolated AN, FDXR and TWNK, providing a summary and enrichment analysis of genes associated with non-isolated AN to elucidate the genotype-phenotype correlation and underlying mechanisms.

GAPO syndrome is an exceptionally-rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by growth retardation, alopecia, pseudoanodontia, and optic abnormalities, with fewer than 60 cases reported globally. We present the first documented case in Syria, highlighting novel otolaryngological and radiological findings that expand the clinical spectrum of this syndrome. A 27-year-old male presented with chronic right-sided otalgia, unilateral conductive hearing loss, and persistent sinonasal symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the frequency and types of pathogenic variants in the COCH gene among Cantabrian patients with nonsyndromic hereditary hearing loss, focusing on their cochleovestibular symptoms.
  • - A cohort of 248 patients with postlingual nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing loss underwent next-generation genetic testing, which revealed that 22.8% had pathogenic variants, with specific attention given to the c.263G>C variant in the COCH gene.
  • - Findings indicate that COCH gene variants are common in the region studied, particularly the c.263G>C variant, which is linked to progressive bilateral hearing loss and vestibular issues, resembling symptoms seen in other similar genetic cases.
