We demonstrate herein a method for chemically modifying cotton fibers and cotton-containing fabric with a light-activated, cationic phenylene-ethynylene (PPE-DABCO) conjugated polyelectrolyte biocide. When challenged with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus atropheaus vegetative cells from liquid suspension, light-activated PPE-DABCO effects 1.2 and 8 log, respectively, losses in viability of the exposed bacteria. These results suggest that conjugated polyelectrolytes retain their activity when grafted to fabrics, showing promise for use in settings where antimicrobial textiles are needed.

Canine extraskeletal osteosarcomas are mesenchymal, osteoid producing tumors that can arise in soft tissues without initial involvement of the bones. An 8-year-old intact male Beagle dog presented with anorexia, abdominal pain, intermittent vomiting and melena. The patient had a history of recurrent ingestion of cotton based-toy fragments, but no prior surgical procedures involving the abdominal cavity.

GWAS of a new MAGIC population containing alleles from five tetraploid Gossypium species identified novel fiber QTL and confirmed previously identified stable QTL. Identification of loci and underlying genes for fiber quality traits will facilitate genetic improvement in cotton fiber quality. In this research, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was carried out for fiber quality attributes using a new multi-parent advanced generation inter-cross (MAGIC) population consisting of 372 recombinant inbred lines (RILs).

Cotton is an important source of natural fibers. The AP2/ethylene response factor (ERF) family is one of the largest plant-specific transcription factors (TFs) groups, playing key roles in plant growth and development. However, the role of ERF TFs in cotton's growth and development remains unclear.

Purpose: This study aimed to characterize spinal cord microstructure in healthy subjects using high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) and tractography.
Methods: Forty-nine healthy subjects (18-50 years, divided into 2 age groups) were included in a prospective study. HARDI of the cervical spinal cord were acquired using a 3T MRI scanner with: 64 directions, b‑value: 1000s/mm, reduced field-of-view (zonally magnified oblique multi-slice), and opposed phase-encoding directions.

Plant cell walls are complex and dynamic cellular structures critical for plant growth, development, physiology, and adaptation. Cellulose is one of the most important components of the cell wall. However, how cellulose microfibrils deposit and assemble into crystalline cellulose remains elusive.
