Upper extremity injuries in the throwing athlete.

Mo Med

Mercy/St. John's Clinic, Missouri State University, Springfield, MO, USA.

Published: August 2011

Upper extremity injuries tend to take more time to recover from, and this is even more so in a throwing athlete. Specific injuries of the shoulder and elbow that are common in the throwing athlete are discussed and how advancements in diagnostic and surgical technology have allowed a quicker, more reliable return for a throwing athlete to their previous level of activity.

Background: Osoto-gari is a leg throw technique that primarily relies on the hip extension to initiate the sweeping motion of the leg. A high sweep contact velocity is a crucial factor in efficiently executing this technique. While some literature emphasises whole-body coordination in the leg-sweeping action, the roles of trunk and head motion remain unclear.

Asymptomatic female softball pitchers have altered hip morphology and cartilage composition.

Sci Rep

January 2025

La Trobe Sport & Exercise Medicine Research Centre, School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport, La Trobe University, Melbourne, VIC, Australia.

Few studies have explored hip morphology and cartilage composition in female athletes or the impact of asymmetric repetitive loading, such as occurs during softball pitching. The current cross-sectional study assessed bilateral bony hip morphology on computed tomography imaging in collegiate-level softball pitchers ('Pitch1', n = 25) and cross-country runners ('Run', n = 13). Magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess cartilage relaxation times in a second cohort of pitchers ('Pitch2', n = 10) and non-athletic controls ('Con', n = 4).

This study analyzed the acute and time-course changes following one resistance training (RT) set (1SET) and three sets (3SET) on hemodynamic and physical performance parameters in individuals with different cognitive impairment levels. Thirty-nine individuals (22 women and 17 men aged 80 ± 9 years) grouped by cognitive impairment (mild [MILD], moderate [MOD], and severe [SEV]) randomly performed two protocols, each separated by one week, of 1SET or 3SET of 10 repetitions. Before (PRE), immediately (POST), and 72 h after (POST72) protocols, the participants performed the following measurements: systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR), 1-kg medicine ball throw (MBT) distance, five-repetition sit-to-stand (STS) time, and handgrip strength (HGS).

Leucine has gained recognition as an athletic dietary supplement in recent years due to its various benefits; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, 20 basketball players were recruited and randomly assigned to two groups. Baseline exercise performance-assessed through a 282-foot sprint, free throws, three-point field goals, and self-rated practice assessments-was measured prior to leucine supplementation.

Chilean National Sports Talent Detection System: Influence of Biological Age, Sex, and Geographic Area.

J Funct Morphol Kinesiol

December 2024

Integrative Laboratory of Biomechanics and Physiology of Effort, (LIBFE), School of Kinesiology, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de los Andes, Santiago 7620001, Chile.

Unlabelled: The purpose of this study was to assess the methodology for selecting sports talent in the Chilean Promising Athletes Program (CPAP).

Methods: The standing broad jump (SBJ), medicine ball chest throw (MBCT), thirty-meter running sprint (RS-30), Agility-T (T-test), and height were analyzed in 3060 schoolchildren from Chile, grouped by sex, age, geographical area (north, central and south) and maturity status at peak height velocity (PHV) in pre-, circa- and post-PHV.

Results: Superior differences were found in boys for all age ranges in SBJ, RS-30, T-test, and MBCT ( < 0.
