Published: September 2011

Current BD Phoenix and Vitek 2 methodologies were assessed as screens for KPC β-lactamases. Using carbapenem MICs or expert system interpretations as screens, both systems exhibited high (97%) sensitivity in tests with 103 well-characterized Gram-negative isolates, 77 of which were KPC producers.

Radiation therapy manages pancreatic cancer in various settings; however, the proximity of gastrointestinal (GI) luminal organs at risk (OARs) poses challenges to conventional radiation therapy. Proton beam therapy (PBT) may reduce toxicities compared to photon therapy. This consensus statement summarizes PBT's safe and optimal delivery for pancreatic tumors.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global public health threat that has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance of Acinetobacter spp. isolated from patients with pneumonia in a Brazilian Pre-Amazon region during the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods of COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • ST1193 is a high-risk bacterial clone found to carry genes for both CTX-type extended-spectrum β-lactamases and NDM-type carbapenemases, making it a significant concern in the Gulf region.
  • Two separate multidrug-resistant isolates of ST1193 were identified using advanced techniques like MALDI-TOF MS and were shown to be resistant to carbapenem antibiotics through susceptibility testing.
  • The study highlights the worry of antibiotic resistance, as the plasmids carrying the NDM-5 carbapenemase genes can transfer between bacteria, complicating treatment options and increasing challenges for infection control efforts.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility of invasive isolates of Serratia marcescens, associated with blood stream infections (BSIs) in patients hospitalized in Varna University Hospital, Bulgaria, as well as to identify the genetic mechanisms responsible for 3rd generation cephalosporin and carbapenem-resistance among these isolates. A total of 45 consecutive S. marcescens isolates, obtained from blood cultures of 45 patients with BSIs, hospitalized during an 8-year period (2016-2023) were included.

Reliable detection of A and C-mediated beta-lactam resistance using automated antimicrobial susceptibility test systems is critical for patient care. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of the new cefoxitin screen test (oxsf02n) on the Vitek 2 card (Vitek 2) and BD Phoenix PMC-100 Gram-Positive AST Panel (Phoenix) against the reference method for the detection of A (and C)-mediated beta-lactam resistance. Two hundred fifty clinical fresh and stock spp.
