Various half-sandwich titanium complexes containing iminoimidazolidide ligands, CpTiCl(2)[1,3-R(2)(CH(2)N)(2)C=N] (1a-d) [R = Ph (a), 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (b), cyclohexyl (c), (t)Bu (d)], have been employed as the catalyst precursors for ethylene polymerisation, syndiospecific styrene polymerisation, and copolymerisation of ethylene with 1-hexene in the presence of MAO cocatalyst; 1d showed the highest catalytic activity for ethylene polymerisation whereas 1b showed the highest activity for syndiospecific styrene polymerisation.

The synthesis, crystal structure, and reactivity of a series of half-sandwich titanium(III) dihalide complexes [Ti(η-CMe)X] (X = Cl, Br, I) and several of its Lewis base derivatives were investigated. The reaction of the trihalides [Ti(η-CMe)X] (X = Cl (), Br (), I ()) with LiAlH (≥1 equiv) in toluene at room temperature results in the formation of the halide-bridged dimers [{Ti(η-CMe)X(μ-X)}] (X = Cl (), Br (), I ()). The treatment of with [Li{N(SiMe)}] (≥2 equiv) at room temperature affords the precipitation of the amido titanium(III) complex [{Ti(η-CMe)(μ-Cl){N(SiMe)}}] (), but analogous reactions of with other lithium reagents [LiR] (R = Me, CHSiMe, NMe) lead to disproportionation into titanium(IV) [Ti(η-CMe)R] and presumably titanium(II) derivatives.

Group 14 element heteroles are the heavier analogues of cyclopentadienes in which a heavier group 14 element atom replaces the sp carbon atom. In particular siloles and, to a somewhat smaller degree, germoles attracted considerable attention since the early 1990s due to their favorable photophysical properties which allowed the construction of OLEDs using group 14 element heteroles as emissive or electron-transport layers. Anions and in particular dianions derived from group 14 element heteroles have been of substantial interest due to the possible occurrence of Hückel aromaticity involving the heavier main group atom.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are exploring titanium(III) derivatives, particularly [{Ti(η-CMe)Cl}] complexes, as potential catalysts in radical chemistry, building on the well-known titanocene reagent [Ti(η-CH)Cl].
  • The study details the synthesis and structural analysis of titanium(III) aggregates, revealing key properties and reactions, including the formation of dimers and trimers through thermolysis and reactions with pinacolborane.
  • The X-ray crystal structures and computational studies indicate a balance between different titanium states in solution, highlighting the unique behaviors and reactivity of these titanium complexes, particularly in different solvents like tetrahydrofuran.

The mol-ecular structure of the title titanium(IV) half-sandwich complex, [Ti(η-CH)(η-CHN)(CHN)], shows a three-legged piano-stool geometry at the central Ti atom, comprising of one penta-methyl-cyclo-penta-dienyl ligand, one bidentate ketimine ligand in an η-coordination mode and one monodentate di-phenyl-amide ligand. Except for van der Waals forces, there are no significant inter-molecular inter-actions in the crystal.
