This study extensively investigated the abundance of microplastics in Thiruvottiyur coastal area of Chennai, India, before and after Cyclone Michaung. The results demonstrated a significant correlation between microplastic distribution and aftermath rainfall. The concentration of microplastics in sediments increased from 150 ± 48 particles kg to 186 ± 21 particles kg after the cyclone.

Numerical modelling for the distribution of Cs and I in the scheldt basin after a potential nuclear accident.

J Environ Radioact

December 2024

Institute of Mechanics, Material and Civil Engineering, Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium; Earth and Life Institute, Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Electronic address:

Using the discontinuous Galerkin method in the SLIM modelling framework, we study the transport in the Scheldt basin and adjacent coastal area of radionuclides possibly emitted by Doel nuclear power plant in the aftermath of an accident. The contamination pathways taken into consideration are direct liquid releases into the water and deposition via the atmosphere. In past nuclear accidents, several radionuclides were released, among which, I and Cs were considered herein.

Lithium isotope evidence for a plumeworld ocean in the aftermath of the Marinoan snowball Earth.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

November 2024

Department of Geosciences, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061.

Article Synopsis
  • The snowball Earth hypothesis suggests that during the Marinoan ice age around 635 million years ago, continental chemical weathering was greatly reduced but then increased afterward.
  • Research conducted on lithium isotope compositions in rock layers from South China shows a distinct trend of decreasing lithium levels as distance from the shore increases, indicating the mixing of meltwater and hypersaline seawater.
  • The findings support the idea that during this period, weak weathering on land and strong reverse weathering on the ocean floor influenced the chemistry of the oceans, aligning with the plumeworld hypothesis.

Article Synopsis
  • The impact of volcanic eruptions on ecosystems, especially on oceanic islands, is complex and includes habitat loss and potential species extinction; however, the effects on specific species like the red-billed chough are not fully understood due to a lack of data before eruptions.
  • The recent eruption of the Tajogaite volcano in La Palma revealed that while there was a temporary decline in chough numbers in some roosts, the overall population size and distribution remained stable.
  • Future research is needed to examine the long-term effects of volcanic ash and toxins on the choughs' habitats and food sources to aid in conservation efforts.

Magnetic graphene oxide-zinc oxide nanocomposite for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of azithromycin under normal sunlight.

J Environ Manage

November 2024

Biochemical Engineering Laboratory, Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Bihta, Patna, 801106, India. Electronic address:

During the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath, there has been a sudden surge in the production and consumption of macrolide antibiotics. This surge has had a significant impact on water quality, leading to concentrations exceeding acceptable limits. To address this concerning issue, a magnetic graphene oxide-zinc oxide nanocomposite (MZG) was synthesized using a straightforward wet chemical synthesis method.
