Non-porous, colloidal silica particles were annealed at three different temperatures, 800, 900 and 1050 °C. The adsorption of lysozyme, a probe of surface roughness, was consistent with progressively reduced surface roughness as temperature increased. The heat treated silica particles were rehydroxylated and then used to pack UHPLC columns. The cationic protein lysozyme was used to probe silanol activity, which exhibited progressively less tailing as the annealing temperature increased. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that the abundance of isolated silanols on the surface was reduced by annealing at 900 °C or 1050 °C. FTIR also revealed that there was markedly increased hydrogen bonding of the isolated silanols to neighbors after rehydroxylation. These results combine to support the hypothesis that (a) isolated silanols on silica cause tailing in RP-LC and (b) nonplanar topography gives rise to isolated silanols.

Well-defined amorphous silica-alumina (ASA) with a relatively low Al loading were synthesized by homogeneous deposition-precipitation of Al on SiO nanoparticles to understand the nature and formation of Brønsted acid sites (BAS). The amount of Al grafted relative to the silanol density was varied by variation of the size of SiO nanoparticles, reflected by their surface areas between 90 and 380 m·g. Two sets of ASA were synthesized, one aiming at a SiOH/Al ratio of 3, corresponding to the maximum amount of BAS represented by Al perturbation of SiOH groups, and the second one aimed at studying the impact of Al dispersion by using a constant Al loading (Si/Al ≈ 103).

The effective conversion of methane to a mixture of more valuable hydrocarbons and hydrogen under mild conditions is a significant scientific and practical challenge. Here, we synthesized Zn-containing nanosized MFI zeolite for direct oxidation of methane in the presence of HO and air. The presence of the surface hydroxyl groups on nanosized MFI-type zeolite and their significant reduction in the Zn-containing nanosized MFI zeolite were confirmed with Infrared Fourier Transform (FTIR) spectroscopy.

Although molecular tetrahedral Ti-oxo species exhibit unique electronic and photochemical properties due to their discrete energy levels, which are different from those of anatase and rutile, such Ti-oxo species are generally unstable and readily transformed to amorphous/crystalline TiO (bulk phases, nanoparticles and clusters) hydrolysis and condensation. Here, molecular Ti-oxo species were immobilised within mesoporous silica SBA-15 by grafting titanium(IV) oxyacetylacetonate using the surface silanol groups of SBA-15 as a scaffold, followed by chemical etching with dilute hydrochloric acid to form molecular TiO species. These Ti species mainly exist as isolated tetrahedrally coordinated structures, as was confirmed by diffuse reflectance UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy.

Omega-3 fatty acids are in high demand due to their efficacy in treating hypertriglyceridemia and preventing cardiovascular diseases. However, the growth of the industry is hampered by low purity and insufficient productivity. This study aims to develop an efficient RP-MPLC purification method for omega-3 fatty acid ethyl esters with high purity and capacity.
