Background: Surface modification of medical polymers can improve biocompatibility. Pure polystyrene is hydrophobic and cannot provide a suitable environment for cell cultures. The conventional method for surface modification of polystyrene is treatment with plasma. In this study, conventional polystyrene was exposed to microwave plasma treatment with oxygen and argon gases for 30, 60, and 180 seconds.
Methods And Results: Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectra investigations of irradiated samples indicated clearly the presence of functional groups. Atomic force microscopic images of samples irradiated with inert and active gases indicated nanometric surface topography. Samples irradiated with oxygen plasma showed more roughness (31 nm) compared with those irradiated with inert plasma (16 nm) at 180 seconds. Surface roughness increased with increasing duration of exposure, which could be due to reduction of the contact angle of samples irradiated with oxygen plasma. Contact angle analysis showed reduction in samples irradiated with inert plasma. Samples irradiated with oxygen plasma showed a lower contact angle compared with those irradiated by argon plasma.
Conclusion: Cellular investigations with unrestricted somatic stem cells showed better adhesion, cell growth, and proliferation for samples radiated by oxygen plasma with increasing duration of exposure than those of normal samples.

Determination of hydrogen peroxide (HO) is of great importance in many systems for controlling the quality of products, food safety, and medical diagnostics. In this work, a highly sensitive photoluminescence film sensor was synthesized based on chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and terephthalic acid (TPA), in the presence of copper (II) ions for determination of hydrogen peroxide. TPA was used as a sensitive probe for detection of hydroxyl radicals produced in a photo-Fenton-like process.

Background And Purpose: Few studies have examined the factors associated with xerostomia during proton and carbon ion radiotherapy for head and neck cancer (HNC), which are reported to have fewer toxic effects compared to traditional photon-based radiotherapy. This study aims to evaluate the performance of machine learning approaches in predicting grade 2 + xerostomia in adults with HNC receiving proton and carbon ion radiotherapy.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective study involving 1,769 adults with HNC who completed proton or carbon ion radiotherapy was conducted.

Traditional defect recovery methods rely on high-temperature annealing, often exceeding 750 °C for FeCrAl. In this study, we introduce electron wind force (EWF)-assisted annealing as an alternative approach to mitigate irradiation-induced defects at significantly lower temperatures. FeCrAl samples irradiated with 5 MeV Zr ions at a dose of 10 cm were annealed using EWF at 250 °C for 60 s.

Zircaloy-4 is extensively used in nuclear reactors as fuel element cladding and core structural material. However, the safety concerns post-Fukushima underscore the need for further enhancing its high-temperature and high-pressure water-side corrosion resistance. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB) irradiation on the microstructures and corrosion resistance of Zircaloy-4, with the goal of improving its performance in nuclear applications.

The natural and laboratory-accelerated weathering of wood-plastic composites (WPCs) based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) plastics was investigated in this study. Injection molded samples of WPCs with different loadings of wood fiber ranging from 0 to 36 wt.% of wood were subjected to laboratory-accelerated weathering and natural weathering.
