Published: September 2007

Spin-spiral structures in a free-standing Fe(110) monolayer are determined by the first-principles film full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method with intra-atomic noncollinear magnetism. The results obtained predict that the spin-spiral structures are energetically favourable over the collinear ferromagnetic state. The interatomic exchange parameters, which are evaluated from the formation energy of the spin-spiral structures, indicate that a competition between the nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic interaction and the long-distant antiferromagnetic interactions leads to the stabilization of the spin-spiral structures. In addition, the spin-orbit coupling is found to play an important role in determining the magnetic ground state.

Switching the spin cycloid in BiFeO with an electric field.

Nat Commun

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA.

Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO) is a multiferroic material that exhibits both ferroelectricity and canted antiferromagnetism at room temperature, making it a unique candidate in the development of electric-field controllable magnetic devices. The magnetic moments in BiFeO are arranged into a spin cycloid, resulting in unique magnetic properties which are tied to the ferroelectric order. Previous understanding of this coupling has relied on average, mesoscale measurements.

Spin-Chirality-Driven Multiferroicity in van der Waals Monolayers.

Driven by the expected contribution of two-dimensional multiferroic systems with strong magnetoelectric coupling to the development of multifunctional nanodevices, here we propose, by means of first-principles calculations, vanadium-halide monolayers as a new class of spin-chirality-driven van der Waals multiferroics. The frustrated 120-deg magnetic structure in the triangular lattice induces a ferroelectric polarization perpendicular to the spin-spiral plane, whose sign is switched by a spin-chirality change. It follows that, in the presence of an applied electric field perpendicular to the monolayers, one magnetic chirality can be stabilized over the other, thereby allowing the long-sought electrical control of spin textures.

Regulation of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ferromagnetic multilayers.

School of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing 100083, People's Republic of China.

Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (i-DMI) exists in the film materials with inversion symmetry breaking, which can stabilize a series of nonlinear spin structures and control their chirality, such as Néel-type domain wall, magnetic skyrmion and spin spiral. In addition, the strength and chirality of i-DMI are directly related to the dynamic behavior of these nonlinear spin structures. Therefore, regulating the strength and chirality of i-DMI not only has an important scientific significance for enriching spintronics and topological physics, but also has a significant practical value for constructing a new generation of memorizer, logic gate, and brain-like devices with low-power.

Article Synopsis
  • Ab initio studies of magnetic superstructures are crucial for understanding quantum materials but face significant computational challenges.
  • To address these challenges, researchers developed a deep equivariant neural network to efficiently model the density functional theory Hamiltonian of magnetic materials, incorporating key physical principles.
  • The new approach enables detailed investigations of complex magnetic configurations, demonstrated through experiments on spin-spiral and moiré magnets, making the study of magnetic skyrmions more accessible.
