By comparison and combination of two strategies, extending π-conjugation and tuning Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) effect, new long-wavelength BODIPY dyes have been efficiently synthesized. The new chromophores exhibit good optical properties: high fluorescence quantum yields, exceptionally large molar extinction coefficients, narrow red-emission bands, and relatively large Stokes shifts etc., in polar or apolar solvents. Besides, the new dyes, under transversal pumping at 532 nm, exhibit highly efficient and stable laser emission tunable from the green to NIR spectral region (570-725 nm). Moreover, one of these new BODIPY derivatives shows cell membrane permeability and bright intracellular red fluorescence. These advantageous characteristics assure the potential of these dyes for biophotonic applications.

Novel BODIPY derivatives possessing different styryl substituents were synthesized using different methods of Knoevenagel-type condensation with conventional heating and microwave radiation in two conditions. Microwave-assisted synthesis significantly reduces reaction time while enhancing its efficiency. The introduction of styryl substituents at the 3 and 5 positions of the BODIPY core resulted in a substantial bathochromic shift, which was affected by the substituents within styryl groups.

Heavy-atom-free photosensitizers are potentially suitable for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this contribution, a new family of unsymmetrical benzothieno-fused BODIPYs with reactive oxygen efficiency up to 50% in air-saturated toluene was reported. Their efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) resulted in the generation of both O and O under irradiation.

To discover new photosensitizers with long wavelength UV-visible absorption, high efficiency, and low side effects for photodynamic therapy, here, a series of novel thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-fused BODIPY derivatives were designed, synthesized and characterized. These compounds had a distinct absorption band at 640-680Â nm, fluorescence emission at 650-760Â nm, and good solubility with anti-aggregation effects. These new compounds possessed obvious singlet oxygen generation ability and photodynamic anti-Eca-109 cancer cells activities in vitro.

The discovery of new photosensitizer drugs with long wavelength Uv-vis absorption, high efficiency and low side-effects is still a challenge in photodynamic therapy. Here a series of novel meso-substitutedphenyl thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-fused BODIPY derivatives were designed, synthesized and characterized. All these compounds have strong absorption at 640-680Â nm and obvious fluorescence emission at 650-760Â nm.
