Secondary localization of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in breast is rare, while concurrent invasive ductal carcinoma and CLL manifesting as a collision tumor in breast is extremely rare. The observation of a CLL infiltration closely associated with a distinct breast neoplasm with the absence of any other localization for the leukemia is an indisputable argument for a relationship between the two diseases. The presence of both tumors is not simply due to chance. This association (CLL and carcinoma) has also been described in other organs. Hereafter, we report a second case of an 80 year-old woman in whom a leukemic infiltrate was confined to the region immediately surrounding poorly differentiated primary breast carcinoma, and we will discuss the association between CLL and carcinoma.

NLRX1 limits inflammatory neurodegeneration in the anterior visual pathway.

J Neuroinflammation

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Division of Neuroimmunology, School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, 21287, USA.

Chronic innate immune activation in the central nervous system (CNS) significantly contributes to neurodegeneration in progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Using multiple experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models, we discovered that NLRX1 protects neurons in the anterior visual pathway from inflammatory neurodegeneration. We quantified retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density and optic nerve axonal degeneration, gliosis, and T-cell infiltration in Nlrx1 and wild-type (WT) EAE mice and found increased RGC loss and axonal injury in Nlrx1 mice compared to WT mice in both active immunization EAE and spontaneous opticospinal encephalomyelitis (OSE) models.

Association between airway microbiota and systemic inflammation markers in non-small cell lung cancer patients.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Chronic Airways Diseases Laboratory, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, 510515, China.

Growing evidences have suggested the airway microbiota may participate in lung cancer progression. However, little was known about the relationship between airway microbiota and lung cancer associated systemic inflammation. Here we aimed to explore the association between sputum microbiota and systemic inflammation in lung cancer.

Glycolysis in asthma: Its role and potential as a diagnostic or therapeutic target.

Int Immunopharmacol

January 2025

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, The Second Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, Jilin, China. Electronic address:

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. A number of immune cells are involved in asthma pathogenesis, such as eosinophils, mast cells, T lymphocytes and neutrophils, as well as airway epithelial cells. Glycolysis plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism, and serves as a bridge between metabolic and inflammatory dysfunction.

Antigen receptor ITAMs provide tonic signaling by acting as guanine nucleotide exchange factors to directly activate R-RAS2.

Sci Signal

Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 28049 Madrid, Spain.

The small GTPase R-RAS2 regulates homeostatic proliferation and survival of T and B lymphocytes and, when present in high amounts, drives the development of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In normal and leukemic lymphocytes, R-RAS2 constitutively binds to antigen receptors through their immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs (ITAMs) and promotes tonic activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway. Here, we examined the molecular mechanisms underlying this direct interaction and its consequences for R-RAS2 activity.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a less common hematological malignancy in Indian people. It accounts for less than 5% of all leukemias. Information on genomic alteration in CLL is limited immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable region (IGHV) mutational status is considered the most reliable prognostic marker.
