Diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis is typically aided through CSF analysis obtained via lumbar puncture (LP), revealing elevated WBCs, increased protein, decreased glucose, and increased opening pressure. While CSF culture confirms the diagnosis, it takes days, prompting reliance on these adjuncts. Introduction: Herpes encephalitis is known to affect patients undergoing brain radiotherapy, but early diagnosis and treatment, the foremost determinants of disease outcome, remain challenging in this patient population. This can be due to attribution of symptoms to the brain tumor and radiation side effects, as well as patients' atypical clinical presentation. Here we sought to highlight pearls and pitfalls in the clinical course and diagnostic workup which may facilitate timely diagnosis and improve disease outcome.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a major contributor to chronic back pain and disability, with limited effective therapeutic options. Current treatment options, including conservative management and surgical interventions, often fail to effectively halt disease progression and come with notable side effects. IVDD is characterized by the breakdown of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the infiltration of inflammatory cells, which exacerbate disc degeneration.
