The serotonergic innervation of the buccal musculature responsible for feeding (radula protraction) was investigated during the maturation of the pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis L., applying light and electron microscopic immunohistochemistry and biochemical approaches. According to epifluorescence and laser confocal microscopy, the first 5-HT-like-immunoreactive (5-HTLIR) processes appeared on the surface of the musculature at the postmetamorphic E80% embryonic stage. Until hatching, the innervation continued to increase in density, showing axon arborizations with projections into the deeper muscle levels. An adult-like pattern of 5-HTLIR innervation appeared at P2-P3 juvenile stages. At the ultrastructural level, close (16-20 nm) but mostly unspecialized neuromuscular contacts were formed by both unlabeled and 5-HTLIR axon profiles from the E80% embryonic stage. Labeled processes were also found located relatively far from the muscle cells. An HPLC assay showed a gradual increase of the 5-HT level in the buccal mass during development. The buccal mass was characterized by a single-component high-affinity 5-HT uptake system, and 5-HT release could be evoked by 100 mM K(+) and blocked in Ca(2+) -free medium. It is suggested that 5-HT plays a wide modulatory role in the peripheral feeding system and is also involved in the functional maturation of the muscle system.

Objectives: Sudden death in multiple system atrophy (MSA) is caused by decreased serotonergic innervation, but there is no routine test method for this decrease. In addition to dopamine transporters, iodine-123-labelled N-(3-fluoropropyl)-2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl) nortropane (I-FP-CIT) binds serotonin transporters (SERTs). We noted a binding potential to quantify the total quantity of I-FP-CIT binding to its receptors.

Neural crest cells give rise to the neurons of the enteric nervous system (ENS) that innervate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract to regulate gut motility. The immense size and distinct subregions of the gut present a challenge to understanding the spatial organization and sequential differentiation of different neuronal subtypes. Here, we profile enteric neurons (ENs) and progenitors at single-cell resolution during zebrafish embryonic and larval development to provide a near-complete picture of transcriptional changes that accompany the emergence of ENS neurons throughout the GI tract.

Presynaptic inhibition mediated by GABAergic interneurons provides regulation of sensory afferent feedback. Serotonin not only promotes locomotion, but also modulates feedback from sensory afferents, both directly and indirectly, potentially by acting on the GABAergic interneurons that mediate presynaptic inhibition.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a powerful modulator of neuronal activity within the central nervous system and dysfunctions of the serotonergic system have been linked to several neuropsychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorders or schizophrenia. The anterior cingulate cortex (aCC) plays an important role in cognitive capture of stimuli and valence processing and it is densely innervated by serotonergic fibers from the nucleus raphe. In order to understand how pathophysiological 5-HT signalling can lead to neuropsychiatric diseases, it is important to understand the physiological actions of 5-HT on cortical circuits.

Members of the Euphausiacea ("krill") generate bioluminescence using light organs, the so-called photophores, including one pair associated with the eyestalks, two pairs on the thoracic segments, and four unpaired photophores on the pleon. The photophores generate light via a luciferin-luciferase type of biochemical reaction in light-emitting cells comprised in a photophore compartment called "lantern". The behavioral significance of bioluminescence in krill is discussed controversially, and possible functions include a defensive function, camouflage by counter-shading, and intra-specific communication.
