Is normalized residual activity a good marker of renal output efficiency?

Background: Output efficiency (OE) and normalized residual activity (NORA) are two parameters that allow quantifying the renal drainage at any moment of renographic acquisition. Although OE is theoretically more accurate than NORA in case of a decreased overall renal function, both parameters present some weaknesses.

Objectives: To compare both parameters and to evaluate whether the clinical information provided by both parameters is identical.

Methods: From a large database of Tc-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine 3 renographic studies, 450 kidneys were selected covering a large range of ages, overall function, split function, and quality of drainage. NORA and OE were calculated at the end of the 20-min renogram, as well as on the late post erect postmicturition (PM) views.

Results: An inverse correlation was observed between NORA 20 and OE 20 (r=-0.926), as well as between NORA PM and OE PM (r=-0.936). Discrepancies were noted in approximately 10% of the kidneys, but main discrepancies, which would result in a different estimation of the quality of drainage, were only observed in 2% of the kidneys. There was no bias in the discordances; OE could reveal a better as well as a worse quality of drainage than NORA. It is likely therefore that imperfections of both parameters might be the cause of the divergences. The stratification of the kidneys according to age, overall renal function, split function, or quality of drainage did not modify the results.

Conclusion: NORA, being much easier to program, can replace the output efficiency in the evaluation of renal drainage.

Background: The oocyte retrieval is a critical step in assisted reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization and fertility preservation. Despite evolving techniques, the optimal aspiration pressure during retrieval remains debatable, with limited in vivo human studies. Existing studies, primarily in vitro and on animals, suggest that inappropriate aspiration pressures can impair oocyte quality.

Background: Arthroplasty is the standard treatment for end-stage haemophilic knee arthritis; however, the choice between single knee arthroplasty (SKA) and bilateral knee arthroplasty (BKA) in a single operation remains controversial due to the risks specific to haemophiliacs.

Methods: Two independent researchers conducted searches across CNKI, CBM, Wanfang, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science, with the last search performed on 15 October 2024. Study results include joint function, complication and various cost.

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The First People's Hospital of Changzhou, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Changzhou, 213003, Jiangsu, China.

Background: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is the most common benign tumor of the ribs, with surgical resection being the preferred treatment modality for rib FD, leading to enhanced quality of life and favorable outcomes. The complexity of surgical intervention varies depending on the location of costal FD, presenting challenges for both open surgical and thoracoscopic approaches. In this study, we present a novel technique for three-port robotic-assisted costectomy utilizing a Gigli saw, detailing our initial findings and outcomes.

The incidence of inflow and drain pain and associated risk factors for patients on peritoneal dialysis.

BMC Nephrol

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, 58th, Zhongshan Road II, Guangzhou, 510080, Guangdong, PR China.

Background: The high prevalence and prolonged duration of inflow pain and drain pain experienced by peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients following PD catheter implantation impact their quality of life. However, there is limited data on the frequency and predisposing factors of these pains in the Chinese population undergoing peritoneal dialysis.

Methods: This study encompassed individuals who underwent peritoneal dialysis catheter implantation at our institution from September 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024.

This study aims to compare the efficacy of laparoscopic cholecystectomy combined with laparoscopic transcystic common bile duct exploration (LTCBDE), laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in the treatment of gallbladder stones with common bile duct stones. We conducted a retrospective comparative analysis based on surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative recovery metrics, total hospitalization costs, gastrointestinal quality of life index (GIQLI) before and after surgery, and the incidence of postoperative complications. No significant differences were found among the three groups in terms of the surgical success rate, first stone clearance rate, intraoperative blood loss, incidence of postoperative complications, and stone recurrence rate (p > 0.
