The scale insect Marchalina hellenica (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Margarodidae) contributes to the production of pine honey in Turkey and Greece via the honeydew excreted when it feeds on pine trees. Although it is an insect of prime economic importance, there is no information on its genetic structure. Preliminary data were obtained based on sequencing analysis of 12s rDNA and COI mtDNA gene segments from samples from four areas of Turkey. Sequences of the 12s rDNA gene segment from Greek samples available in GenBank were also included. No variability was detected concerning the COI mtDNA gene segment analysis, although 13 haplotypes were revealed based on the 12s rDNA gene segment. The most distant population was from Mudanya-Bursa Province (Turkey). Further research is necessary on the genetic structure and variability of M. hellenica populations from the two neighboring countries.

Background: Depression constitutes a risk factor for osteoporosis, but underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms are not fully understood. MiRNAs influence gene expression and are carried by extracellular vesicles (EV), affecting cell-cell communication.
Aims: (1) Identify the difference in miRNA expression between depressed patients and healthy controls; (2) Analyze associations of these miRNAs with bone turnover markers; (3) Analyze target genes of differentially regulated miRNAs and predict associated pathways regarding depression and bone metabolism.

Recent outbreaks of PRRSV in live attenuated vaccine-immunized pig farms in Tianjin, China have raised questions about the etiological characteristics and pathogenicity of the PRRSV variant, which remains unknown. In this study, a multiple lineages recombinant PRRSV strain named TJ-C6, was isolated and identified. Phylogenetic trees and genome homology analyses revealed that TJ-C6 belonged to lineage 1.

Synthetic nucleic acids, also defined as xenobiotic nucleic acids (XNAs), opened an avenue to address the limitations of nucleic acid therapeutics and the development of alternative carriers for genetic information in biotechnological applications. Two related XNA systems of high interest are the α-l-threose nucleic acid (TNA) and (3'-2') phosphonomethyl threosyl nucleic acid (tPhoNA), where TNAs show potential in antisense applications, whereas tPhoNAs are investigated for their predisposition toward orthogonal genetic systems. We present predictions on helical models of TNA and tPhoNA chemistry in homoduplexes and in complex with native ribose chemistries.

A novel aerobic marine bacterium, FRT2, isolated from surface water of a fishing port in Fukui, Japan, was characterised based on phylogenomic and phylogenetic analyses combined with classical phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characterisations. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain FRT2 clustered with genus Leeuwenhoekiella. Closest relatives of FRT2 were Leeuwenhoekiella palythoae KMM 6264 and Leeuwenhoekiella nanhaiensis G18 with 16S rRNA gene sequence identities of 95.
