"Vodka energy": too much for the adolescent nephron?

We report here the case of a 17-year-old boy who suffered acute renal failure after consuming 3 L of energy drink (ED) in combination with 1 L of vodka amounting to 4600 mg of taurine and 780 mg of caffeine mixed with 380 g of alcohol. The consumption of this mixture is extremely popular in adolescents, because the joint effects of caffeine and taurine reduce the effect of alcohol. Although there have been case reports of deaths linked to the consumption of EDs with and without alcohol, awareness of the possible dangers is still low. The fact that athletes and major sports events are sponsored by ED manufacturers implies that they may even be healthy and performance-enhancing.

With reasonably good specificity and sensitivity, the speed and convenience of COVID-19 antigen tests have led to self-testing in schools, offices, and universities in the European Union (EU). Although self-testing can be beneficial and increase the accessibility to testing, there are potential ways to confound a positive COVID-19 lateral flow test. We observed that all soft drinks, energy drinks, alcoholic beverages (vodka, whiskey, and brandy), commercially bottled mineral water, and carbonated mineral water caused the appearance of a red test line.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the surface roughness of three flowable esthetic restorative materials after exposure to sports/energy drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Materials And Methods: A total of 210 specimens of dimension (2cm diameter and 2 mm thickness) with giomer, compomer, and composite (70 samples with each esthetic material) were made with the help of plastic rings. In this work, a simple and inexpensive flow thermal infrared enthalpimetry (TIE-F) method was developed through a combination of flow injection analysis and thermal infrared enthalpimetry (TIE) to determine the alcohol content of distilled beverages (cachaça, cognac, and vodka). The principle used in this method consisted of monitoring the enthalpy of dissolution of ethanol through a low-cost infrared sensor coupled to a flow system.
