Introduction: The Utah Department of Health created a program to decrease deaths and other harm from prescription pain medication. Program goals included educating the public, providers, and patients on prescription safety and creating guidelines for providers on prescribing opioids.
Program Interventions: The department's Prescription Pain Medication Program was organized in collaboration with many state agencies as well as public and private organizations. The program developed a statewide media campaign, running messages using the slogan "Use Only As Directed" from May 2008 to May 2009. The program facilitated the publication and distribution of opioid prescribing guidelines.
Program Outcomes: Collaboration among stakeholders to develop educational materials furthered use of the materials. The program distributed more than 2,800 copies of the prescribing guidelines and more than 120,000 copies of print materials, including bookmarks, patient information cards, and posters.
Statewide Data: In 2008, unintentional overdose deaths from prescription opioids dropped 14.0% compared with the number of deaths in 2007. In 2009, the number of deaths remained stable from 2008. The campaign funding ended in May 2009. State agencies have continued collaborating and have pooled money to renew the media campaign in 2011. Evaluation of the impact of the prescribing guidelines is ongoing.
Conclusions: The state-funded educational campaign may have contributed to a reduction in overdose deaths. Collaboration among state agencies and a sustained educational effort are important aspects of a successful prevention campaign.

Objectives: Stigma is known to be a major barrier to treatment for people who use drugs (PWUD). This study uses the Stigma and Health Discrimination Framework to analyze how different forms of stigma shape experiences in the wake of an overdose incident, and perceptions of the efficacy and utility of postoverdose interventions among a sample of PWUD in Dayton, Ohio-a location with a high overdose rate.
Methods: Interviews were conducted with 23 individuals who self-reported past-month illicit opioid, crack/cocaine, or methamphetamine use who had experienced or witnessed a drug overdose in the past 6 months.

Introduction: This study uses the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment (EPIS) model to retrospectively describe the mail-based overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) program developed in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC) for use in the HEALing Communities Study in Kentucky (HCS-KY) and details the reach of this innovative delivery model.
Methods: HCS-KY is a community-engaged cluster-randomized trial assessing the effects of implementing evidence-based practices, including OEND, on overdose death reduction across 16 communities highly impacted by the opioid epidemic in Kentucky. The study launch coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of opioid overdose deaths has increased over the past several years, mainly driven by an increase in the availability of highly potent synthetic opioids, like fentanyl, in the un-regulated drug supply. Over the last few years, changes in the drug supply, and in particular the availability of counterfeit pills containing fentanyl, have made oral use of opioids a more common route of administration. Here, we used a drinking in the dark (DiD) paradigm to model oral fentanyl self-administration using increasing fentanyl concentrations in male and female mice over 5 weeks.
