We report the case of an Italian speaker (GBC) with classical Wernicke's aphasia syndrome following a vascular lesion in the left posterior middle temporal region. GBC exhibited a selective phonological deficit in spoken language production (repetition and reading) which affected all word classes irrespective of grammatical class, frequency, and length. GBC's production of number words, in contrast, was error free. The specific pattern of phonological errors on non-number words allows us to attribute the locus of impairment at the level of phonological form retrieval of a correctly selected lexical entry. These data support the claim that number words are represented and processed differently from other word categories in language production.

Can one shift attention among voices at a cocktail party during a silent pause? Researchers have required participants to attend to one of two simultaneous voices - cued by its gender or location. Switching the target gender or location has resulted in a performance 'switch cost' - which was recently shown to reduce with preparation when a gender cue was presented in advance. The current study asks if preparation for a switch is also effective when a voice is selected by location.

Listeners adjust their perception of sound categories when confronted with variations in speech. Previous research on speech recalibration has primarily focused on segmental variation, demonstrating that recalibration tends to be specific to individual speakers and situations and often persists over time. In this study, we present findings on the perceptual learning of lexical tone in Standard Chinese, a suprasegmental feature signaled primarily through pitch variations to distinguish morpheme/word meanings.

We report a case of crossmodal bilingual aphasia-aphasia in two modalities, spoken and sign language-and dysgraphia in both writing and fingerspelling. The patient, Sunny, was a 42 year-old woman after a left temporo-parietal stroke, a speaker of Hebrew, Romanian, and English and an adult learner, daily user of Israeli Sign language (ISL). We assessed Sunny's spoken and sign languages using a comprehensive test battery of naming, reading, and repetition tasks, and also analysed her spontaneous-speech and sign.
