The testicular toxicity of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been extensively studied. However, the detailed mechanism is still obscure. In the present study, male C57 mice were treated with different doses of Aroclor 1254 (a commercial PCB mixture) once every 3 days by oral gavage. After exposure to Aroclor 1254 for 50 days, the sperm count decreased in a dose-dependent manner. Cell proliferation and apoptosis are key processes regulating development of the testis, and alterations in these processes may underlie testicular dysgenesis. Our results showed that the germ cell proliferation was inhibited and the apoptosis of the germ cell was induced in a dose-dependent manner after treatment with Aroclor 1254. Although there was no significant change in serum testosterone levels and androgen receptor expression levels after treatment with different dosages of Aroclor 1254, the estradiol levels decreased and the expression of estrogen receptor (ER) β increased in a dose-dependent manner, whereas an elevation of the expression of ERα was only observed in the 50μg/kg group. The data as a whole suggested that inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in germ cells, and a differential regulation of ER, may be involved in the testicular toxicity of PCBs.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants known for their environmental persistence and bioaccumulation, posing significant health risks. This study examines the toxic effects of a representative PCBs (Aroclor 1254) on yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) exposured for 30 days through a multi-omics approach. Histopathological examinations revealed structural damage to the intestinal structure and hepatic steatosis, along with elevated serum lipopolysaccharide levels, indicating compromised intestinal barrier integrity and liver inflammation.

The rat S9 microsome fraction is commonly used to assess compound metabolite formation during genotoxicity assessments. However, methods using S9 have not been standardized for genotoxicity studies, and different experimental methods are used at various facilities. Therefore, this study investigated whether the differences between the two experimental conditions (1) S9 inducers, phenobarbital + beta-naphthoflavones vs.

The goal of this study was to compare the bioaccumulation of the PCB mixture Aroclor 1254 in zebrafish to cardiac and neurologic outcomes. The establishment of effect concentrations (ECs) for cardiac and neurotoxic effects of PCBs in early life stage fish is challenging due to a lack of measured PCB concentrations in test media (e.g.

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, sold commercially as different mixtures under the trade name Aroclor in the USA, pose ecological and public health hazards. In the environment, they are monitored as Aroclors for potential source tracking and more accurately as congeners to understand the extent of PCB contamination in total. Because of the subjectivity with which Aroclors are currently identified in samples, striving towards clarity is a focus for analytical chemists.
