Oral and maxillofacial surgeons perform a wide variety of surgical procedures. One of the major complications of these various surgical techniques is uncontrolled bleeding. The best management of perioperative hemorrhage is prevention. This includes proper preoperative patient evaluation, knowledge of the various bleeding disorders, and the characterization of the correct methods of management. This article evaluates various causes of bleeding, and identifies both local and systemic and pathways. Considerations of treatment for patients with these various disorders are discussed regarding the best management options for adequate hemostasis.

Background: Despite assumptions that insurance coverage would boost oral healthcare utilization in Nigeria, there is insufficient evidence supporting this claim. This study investigates the associations between residential location, awareness of the oral health insurance scheme, history of dental service utilization, and acceptance of oral health insurance among individuals benefiting from the Ilera Eko Scheme; a scheme that integrates preventive and curative oral health care into the state health insurance scheme.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from July to November 2023 recruiting from a database of 1520 enrollees aged of 18 and 72-years-old who had been on the scheme for at least three months.

Many scholars have studied the relationship between obesity and periodontitis. The relationship between different obesity indicators and periodontitis seems to vary. In this study, we would like to explore the relationship between three commonly used obesity indicators, WWI (weight-adjusted-waist index), BMI (body mass index), WtHR (waist-to-height ratio), and periodontitis, and try to find the most clinically valuable indicators.

In cases of large mandibular continuity defects resulting from malignancy resection, the current standard of care involves using patient-specific/custom titanium reconstruction plates along with autogenous grafts (fibula, scapula, or iliac crest segments). However, when grafts are not feasible or desired, only the reconstruction plate is used to bridge the gap. Unfortunately, metal osteosynthesis and reconstruction plates, including titanium, exhibit adverse effects such as stress-shielding and limitations in accurate postoperative irradiation (especially with proton-beam therapy).

The reported complications after arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint are rare, which makes it to an outpatient and safe oral and maxillofacial surgical procedure. A penetration into the middle cranial fossa is an extremely rare but serious complication for the conventional needle arthrocentesis. The simple technical modification described herein could help to easily retain the puncture depth via an endodontic silicone stopper to avoid this rare complication.
