This paper presents a set of calorimetric measurements with the aim of better understanding the calorific nature of hydrothermal carbonization. Presented values so far show an inadequately high scatter to do so, preventing a well funded assessment of the energetic feasibility of this process. The heat released during hydrothermal carbonization at 240°C measured with the applied differential calorimetry setup is -1.06MJ/kg(glucose,daf) with a standard deviation of 14%, -1.07MJ/kg(cellulose,daf) with a standard deviation of 9%, and -0.76MJ/kg(wood,daf) with a standard deviation of 32%. These results are in good agreement with the theoretically derived maximum heat release. Despite the comparably high experimental standard deviation of these results, their accuracy is considerably higher than previously published results.

Conventionally, the product quality specification and control chart limits are determined as the mean plus and minus 3 sample standard deviations with the assumption that the quality data is normally distributed. These limits correspond to an interval centered at the mean, covering approximately 97.3% of the population.

Previous studies suggested that fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and branched short-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) are associated with glucose regulation. However, the potential relationship between circulating SCFAs and BCFAs with incident diabetes risk in both men and women remains unidentified in prospective cohort studies. In this study, we examined a panel of nine serum SCFAs and BCFAs in 3414 subjects with incident diabetes, and matched normoglycemic controls from the China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort study.

Purpose: Following the relatively recent introduction of single-inhaler triple therapies in Japan, this study compared the effectiveness of switching from multiple-inhaler triple therapy (MITT) to once-daily fluticasone furoate/umeclidinium/vilanterol (FF/UMEC/VI) by investigating COPD exacerbations and adherence among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Japan.
Methods: This retrospective, pre-post cohort study using the Medical Data Vision Co. Ltd database identified patients with ≥1 inpatient diagnosis and/or ≥2 outpatient diagnoses of COPD at age ≥40 years prior to the index date (first/earliest date of single-inhaler FF/UMEC/VI initiation from May 1, 2019-February 28, 2022, following a switch from MITT).

Background And Aims: Traditional teaching methods in medical education often fail to engage students or foster critical research skills required for evidence-based medicine. Project-based learning (PBL) is widely recognized for promoting active learning and improving academic performance, although its application in research-focused medical courses remains underexplored, especially in low-resource settings. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PBL in enhancing academic performance and originality compared to traditional literature review-based assessments.

Background Tricuspid valve regurgitation is frequently overlooked by cardiologists and cardiac surgeons alike; consequently, the tricuspid valve is often referred to as "the forgotten" valve. It is the most common complication of left heart valve disease. Ring annuloplasty and suture (De Vega) annuloplasty represent two common surgical treatment techniques.
