We describe how the full, isotropic and anisotropic, magnetisation of samples as small as tens of micrometers in size can be sensitively measured using a piezoresistive microcantilever and a small, moveable ferromagnet. Depending on the position of the ferromagnet, a strong but highly local field gradient of up to ∼4200 T/m can be applied at the sample or removed completely during a single measurement. In this way, the magnetic force and torque on the sample can be independently determined without moving the sample or cycling the experimental system. The technique can be used from millikelvin temperatures to ∼85 K and in magnetic fields from 2 T to the highest fields available. We demonstrate its application in measurements of the semimagnetic semiconductor Hg(1 - x)Fe(x)Se, where we achieved a moment sensitivity of better than 2.5 × 10(-14) J/T for both isotropic and anisotropic components.

Range and accuracy of in-plane anisotropic thermal conductivity measurement using the laser-based Ångstrom method.

Rev Sci Instrum

High heat fluxes in electronic devices must be effectively dissipated to prevent local hotspots, which are critical for long-term device reliability. In particular, advanced semiconductor packaging trends toward thin form factor products increase the need for understanding and improving in-plane conduction heat spreading in anisotropic materials. The 2D laser-based Ångstrom method, an extension of traditional Ångstrom and lock-in thermography techniques, measures in-plane thermal properties of anisotropic sheet-like materials.

In simulations of groundwater flow through dipping aquifers, layers of model cells are often "deformed" to follow the top and bottom elevations of the aquifers. When this approach is used in MODFLOW, adjacent cells within the same model layer are vertically offset from one another, and the standard conductance-based (two-point) formulation for flow between cells does not rigorously account for these offsets. The XT3D multi-point flow formulation in MODFLOW 6 is designed to account for geometric irregularities in the grid, including vertical offsets, and to provide accurate results for both isotropic and anisotropic groundwater flow.

The anisotropic mechanical properties of fiber-embedded biological tissues are essential for understanding their development, aging, disease progression, and response to therapy. However, accurate and fast assessment of mechanical anisotropy in vivo using elastography remains challenging. To address the dilemma of achieving both accuracy and efficiency in this inverse problem involving complex wave equations, we propose a computational framework that utilizes the traveling wave expansion model.

We investigate the orientational properties of a homogeneous and inhomogeneous tetrahedral four-patch fluid (Bol-Kern-Frenkel model). Using integral equations, either (i) HNC or (ii) a modified HNC scheme with a simulation input, the full orientational dependence of pair and direct correlation functions is determined. Density functionals for the inhomogeneous problem are constructed via two different methods.

Nyquist ghost elimination for diffusion MRI by dual-polarity readout at low b-values.

Dual-polarity readout is a simple and robust way to mitigate Nyquist ghosting in diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging but imposes doubled scan time. We here propose how dual-polarity readout can be implemented with little or no increase in scan time by exploiting an observed b-value dependence and signal averaging. The b-value dependence was confirmed in healthy volunteers with distinct ghosting at low b-values but of negligible magnitude at= 1000 s/mm.
