The formation mechanism of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) has been a key to high-resolution sub-diffraction lithography or high-efficiency large-area nanotexturing. We show the evolution of LIPSS formation from a nanohole seed structure to high-spatial-frequency LIPSS by using a tightly focused and rectangular-shaped laser beam with different shape-polarization orientations. Formation of LIPSS based on light intensity distribution without invoking any long-range electromagnetic modes achieved quantitative match between modeling and experiment.

We investigate transient nanotextured heterogeneity in vanadium dioxide (VO) thin films during a light-induced insulator-to-metal transition (IMT). Time-resolved scanning near-field optical microscopy (Tr-SNOM) is used to study VO across a wide parameter space of infrared frequencies, picosecond time scales, and elevated steady-state temperatures with nanoscale spatial resolution. Room temperature, steady-state, phonon enhanced nano-optical contrast reveals preexisting "hidden" disorder.

Micro- and nanotextured surfaces with reconfigurable textures can enable advancements in the control of wetting and heat transfer, directed assembly of complex materials, and reconfigurable optics, among many applications. However, reliable and programmable directional shape in large scale is significant for prescribed applications. Herein, we demonstrate the self-directed fabrication and actuation of large-area elastomer micropillar arrays, using magnetic fields to both program a shape-directed actuation response and rapidly and reversibly actuate the arrays.
