Unlabelled: Leptospirosis is a commonly encountered type of zoonosis, especially in tropical regions. There is insufficient data regarding its frequency in non-tropical regions such as Turkey. Although leptospirosis presents with a mild icteric form in nearly 90% of cases, it can lead to Weils disease characterized by fever as well as fulminant hepatorenal and respiratory failure, in approximately 5 - 10% of cases. In this case report, we present a patient with Weil's disease, complicated with multiorgan failure.

Keywords: Weils disease; Leptospirosis; Multiorgan failure.

Leptospirosis, an infection caused by the spirochete Leptospira and commonly attributed to the underdeveloped world, is frequently under-diagnosed in the United States. This report discusses the case of a 79-year-old male with no significant medical history who presented to the ED with recurrent falls. Initial laboratory results demonstrated severe acute kidney injury, hyperbilirubinemia, and thrombocytopenia.

Comprehension of acoustically degraded emotional prosody in Alzheimer's disease and primary progressive aphasia.

Sci Rep

Dementia Research Centre, Department of Neurodegenerative Disease, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London, 1st Floor, 8-11 Queen Square, London, WC1N 3AR, UK.

Previous research suggests that emotional prosody perception is impaired in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA). However, no previous research has investigated emotional prosody perception in these diseases under non-ideal listening conditions. We recruited 18 patients with AD, and 31 with PPA (nine logopenic (lvPPA); 11 nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA) and 11 semantic (svPPA)), together with 24 healthy age-matched individuals.

Little is known about the epidemiology of leptospirosis in the Dominican Republic, the second most populous country in the Caribbean. We report on findings from a multi-stage household survey across two regions in the country that reveals a previously under-estimated burden of human Leptospira infection. Our findings, based on the reference-standard microscopic agglutination test, indicate a complex picture of serogroup diversity, spatial heterogeneity in infection and risk, and a marked discrepancy between reported cases and serologically estimated infections.

Allogeneic umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells as treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus: a single-centre, open-label, dose-escalation, phase 1 study.

Background: Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with inadequate responses to standard therapies have unmet therapeutic needs. The immunomodulatory, proangiogenic, and antifibrotic properties of mesenchymal stromal cells support their use in treating patients with SLE. We aimed to assess the safety of a single intravenous infusion of allogeneic umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells in patients with severe SLE.
