At present readers of English have still limited access to Vygotsky's writings. Existing translations are marred by mistakes and outright falsifications. Analyses of Vygotsky's work tend to downplay the collaborative and experimental nature of his research. Several suggestions are made to improve this situation. New translations are certainly needed and new analyses should pay attention to the contextual nature of Vygotsky's thinking and research practice.

International literature on the history of Russian psychology is largely limited to the development of Activity theory and cultural-historical theory. This paper aims to go beyond these limits by introducing a figure little known to an international audience, Boris Parygin, who emerged in the 1960s with his "grand" project for the development of Russian social psychology, significantly different from the Soviet psychology "mainstream," stemming from Vygotsky, Luria, and Alexei Nikolaevich Leontiev. We demonstrate that Parygin's works belong to a theoretical and methodological tradition of social and humanitarian scholarship that had been developing in Russia since 1870s.

Recent historical research has shown that the large complex of research conducted by Aleksandr Luria on aphasia in brain-damaged soldiers during the Second World War was already started at the end of the 1920s, under the theoretical influence of Lev Vygotsky and the results of his clinical studies. The first written document of Luria's interest in neuropsychological investigation is the abstract of a conference held on November 27, 1932, a text published in Russian in 1933 and never reprinted, and here translated for the first time into a Western language.
