Four identical pilot-scale landfill reactors with different alternative composite liners were simultaneously operated for a period of about 540 days to investigate and to simulate the migration behaviors of phenolic compounds (phenol, 2-CP, 2-MP, 3-MP, 4-MP, 2-NP, 4-NP, 2,4-DNP, 2,4-DCP, 2,6-DCP, 2,4,5-TCP, 2,4,6-TCP, 2,3,4,6-TeCP, PCP) and heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni) from landfill leachate to the groundwater. Alternative landfill liners of four reactors consist of R1: Compacted clay liner (10 cm+10 cm, k=10(-8)m/sn), R2: Geomembrane (2 mm HDPE)+compacted clay liner (10 cm+10 cm, k=10⁻⁸ m/sn), R3: Geomembrane (2 mm HDPE)+compacted clay liner (10 cm, k=10⁻⁸ m/sn)+bentonite liner (2 cm)+compacted clay liner (10 cm, k=10⁻⁸ m/sn), and R4: Geomembrane (2 mm HDPE)+compacted clay liner (10 cm, k=10⁻⁸ m/sn)+zeolite liner (2 cm)+compacted clay liner (10 cm, k=10⁻⁸ m/sn). Wastes representing Istanbul municipal solid wastes were disposed in the reactors. To represent bioreactor landfills, reactors were operated by leachate recirculation. To monitor and control anaerobic degradation in the reactors, variations of conventional parameters (pH, alkalinity, chloride, conductivity, COD, TOC, TKN, ammonia and alcaly metals) were also investigated in landfill leachate samples. The results of this study showed that about 35-50% of migration of organic contaminants (phenolic compounds) and 55-100% of migration of inorganic contaminants (heavy metals) to the model groundwater could be effectively reduced with the use of bentonite and zeolite materials in landfill liner systems. Although leachate contaminants can reach to the groundwater in trace concentrations, findings of this study concluded that the release of these compounds from landfill leachate to the groundwater may potentially be of an important environmental concern based on the experimental findings.

To study the contaminant transport behavior in the underlying clay liner of a dredged sludge dumping site, a one-dimensional large strain nonlinear consolidation and contaminant transport coupled model is established, and the corresponding numerical solutions for the proposed coupled model is obtained. The numerical results are compared and investigated with the existing theoretical model to verify the correctness of the coupled model. Furthermore, the effects of dredged sludge landfill method and initial effective stress distribution on the contaminant transport behavior in the underlying clay liner and the breakthrough time of the underlying clay liner are investigated.

This paper examines the feasibility of the natural soil and sewage sludge ash (SSA) mixtures, which satisfy the criteria to be used as landfill liners. The effect of SSA content on hydraulic conductivity and strength characteristics of natural soil and SSA mixtures has been investigated through a series of laboratory tests. The results demonstrate that mixtures exhibit an increase in both hydrodynamic diffusion coefficient and strength with the increasing SSA content.

In municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, biodegradation of the organic MSW fraction results in elevated waste and basal liner temperatures which have the potential to cause the clay component of the basal liner to experience severe moisture loss over time and eventually undergo desiccation cracking. Cracking of the basal liner's clay component would result in an uncontrolled release of contaminants into the surrounding environment and ultimately give rise to a variety of major environmental concerns. Accordingly, this study examined the variation of temperature-moisture profiles along the depth of a compacted clay liner (CCL) exposed to different constant elevated waste temperatures (CETs) in the absence and presence of two heat reduction techniques, respectively.

This study focuses on polyamide 6/organo-modified montmorillonite (PA6/OMMT) nanocomposites as potential liner materials, given the growing interest in enhancing the performance of type IV composite overwrapped hydrogen storage pressure vessels. The mechanical properties of PA6/OMMT composites with varying filler concentrations were investigated across a temperature range relevant to hydrogen storage conditions (-40 °C to +85 °C). Liner collapse, a critical issue caused by rapid gas discharge, was analyzed using an Ishikawa diagram to identify external and internal factors.

Leachate emanating from landfills contains ammonia which may cause serious health effects on living things. An effectively designed clay barrier should not allow the contaminant to infiltrate the soil and groundwater systems. The utilization of certain industrial by-products in engineered landfill barriers, not only reduces the need for conventional liner materials but also helps in sustainable waste management.
