ConspectusLight-driven polymerizations and their application in 3D printing have revolutionized manufacturing across diverse sectors, from healthcare to fine arts. Despite the popularized notion that with 3D printing "imagination is the only limit", we and others in the scientific community have identified fundamental hurdles that restrict our capabilities in this space. Herein, we describe the group's efforts in developing photochemical systems that respond to nontraditional colors of light to elicit the rapid, spatiotemporally controlled formation of plastics.

Friction stir processing (FSP) is successfully employed to alleviate their hook defects of friction stir lap welding (FSLW) of aluminum alloys. The mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics are compared and analyzed between the FSLW&FSP joint fabricated by FSLW and FSP and the FSLW joint. The microstructural analysis shows that the hook defect zone at the advancing side of the FSLW joint is changed into the overlap zone (OZ) of the FSLW&FSP joint due to microstructure reconstruction caused by performing the FSP.

In this study, we developed a novel composite catalytic hydrogel, which integrates excellent mechanical properties, catalytic activity, and sensing performance. Discarded hydrogel sensors are reused as templates for in-situ generation of metal nanoparticles, and multifunctional hydrogels combining sensing and catalysis are realized. Polyacrylamide (PAM) provides a three-dimensional network structure, while octadecyl methacrylate (SMA) acts as a hydrophobic association center, enhancing the structural stability of the hydrogel.

A coarse-grained model combining the acceptor-hydrogen-donor 3-body potential is first developed in this work to explore the fracture property and microscopic mechanisms of associative hydrogen-bonded polymers (AHBPs). Next, a triaxial deformation mode is performed to reveal that the fracture toughness of AHBPs initially improves and then is reduced as the number of active groups increases. By characterizing the stress decomposition, the strong hydrogen bond (HB) network improves the maximum stress but reduces the elongation.

Despite significant advancements in hydrogels in recent years, their application in corneal repair remains limited by several challenges, including unfitted curvatures, inferior mechanical properties, and insufficient reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging activities. To address these issues, this study introduces a 3D-printed corneal scaffold with nanocomposite hydrogel consisting of gelatin methacrylate (GelMA), poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), Laponite, and dopamine. GelMA and PEGDA act as matrix materials with photo-crosslinking abilities.
