Extended life for blood serum analysis columns using dual zone chromatographic materials.

Published: April 1990

Column lifetimes of novel dual zone material (DZM) adsorbents were evaluated by direct serum injection analysis for drugs by high-performance liquid chromatography. Porous silica was converted to DZMs in which the outer zone was enriched in an immobilized lipophobic moiety, the perfluorobutylethylenesilyl group, and the internal zone was enriched in a lipophilic octadecylsilyl group. Performance during repetitive serum analyses for phenobarbital and carbamezepine by reverse phase HPLC was compared to that of control adsorbents of the same composition but without the dual zone distribution. The DZM columns had lifetimes up to 4 times longer than the controls. Furthermore, under these conditions, even the control columns had considerably longer lifetimes than conventional but more retentive reverse phase columns. The DZM column lifetimes also appeared to be comparable to or better than those of the recently introduced Pinkerton packings and have much better adsorbent design flexibility and pH operating latitute.

We propose and demonstrate a photonic compressive sensing (PCS) scheme for microwave signals using optical pulse random mixing, significantly enhancing both the compression ratio and operating frequency range. Unlike continuous-wave laser-based PCS systems, our approach mitigates the non-ideal characteristics of the pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS), such as sloped edges and amplitude jitters, resulting in a more ideal compression process. Additionally, the high harmonic components of the optical pulses further facilitate wideband downconversion, improving the system's operating frequency range.

The expanding prevalence of microbial resistance to conventional treatments has triggered a race to develop alternative/improved strategies to combat drug-resistant microorganisms in an efficient manner. Here, the lethal impact of the biosynthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) against multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria has been elucidated. AuNPs, synthesized from the extracts of the fruit, leaf and peel of the Citrus maxima plant, were physicochemically characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), electron microscopy and spectroscopic techniques not only confirmed the production of AuNPs of size below 100 nm but also identified the phytochemicals adsorbed onto the surface of NPs.

Microplastics (MPs) easily migrate into deeper soil layers, posing potential risks to subterranean habitats and groundwater. However, the mechanisms governing the vertical migration of MPs in soil, particularly aged MPs, remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the transport of MPs under varying MPs properties, soil texture and hydrology conditions.

Currently, the clinical drugs for Parkinson's disease (PD) only focus on motor symptoms, while non-motor symptoms like depression are usually neglected. Even though, the efficacy of existing neurotherapeutic drugs is extremely poor which is due to the blood brain barrier (BBB). Therefore, a biomimetic polydopamine carbon dots (PDA C-dots) at 2-4 nm was synthesized, while exosomes from macrophages were applied to encapsulate PDA C-dots for improving their BBB-crossing ability and inflammation-targeting effect.

Mitophagy that disrupt mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), represents a critical focus in pharmacology. However, the discovery and evaluation of MMP-disrupting drugs are often hampered using commercially available marker molecules that target similar or identical zones. These markers can significantly interfere with, obscure, or amplify the functional effects of MMP-targeting drugs, frequently leading to clinical failures.
