Encapsidation of the DNA of the virulent Bacillus subtilis phage SPP1 follows a processive unidirectional headful-mechanism and initiates at a unique genomic location (pac). We have cloned a fragment of SPP1 DNA containing the pac site flanked by reporter genes into the chromosome of B. subtilis. Infection of such cells with SPP1 led to highly efficient packaging, initiated at the inserted pac site, of chromosomal DNA. The directionality in the packaging of this DNA was the same as observed with vegetative phage DNA. Mutagenizing the chromosomal pac insert defined an 83 base pair segment containing the pac cleavage site which is sufficient to direct phage specific DNA encapsidation. The packaging recognition signal as defined can also be utilized by the SPP1 related phages 41c, SF6 and rho 15.

Background: The independent and interrelated long-term effects of the exposome such as air pollution, greenness, and ambient temperature on lung function are not well understood, yet relevant in the light of climate change.
Methods: Pre-bronchodilation FEV1 from five mature birth cohorts (N = 4724) and three adult cohorts (N = 6052) from five European countries were used to assess cross-sectional associations with air pollution, greenness, and ambient temperature, assigned to their residential address. All two-way interactions and square terms were a priori included in building the final elastic net regression model.
Background: The Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMHCS) Acute Care Rehabilitation Team began implementing the Keep Your Move in the Tube (KYMITT) protocol in February 2023 to improve patient mobility and offer an alternative to traditional sternal precautions. The goal of KYMITT is for patients to remain within a safe zone (referred to as "the tube") rather than complying with time and weight restrictions, which are the cornerstone of traditional sternal precautions. In previous studies, KYMITT was associated with greater independence after surgery without placing patients at an increased risk of experiencing a surgical site infection.

Economic development, marine transportation, and oil exploration are all activities that are increasing in the Arctic region, and there is concern regarding increased oil-related contaminants entering this sensitive environment. Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are the main chemical constituents in oil-related contaminants and have been detected in wildlife species following both acute and chronic exposure. In 2020, an oil spill occurred in Kaikopok Bay near Postville, NL, Canada.

Objective: Of this study was to analyse the correlation of gene polymorphisms with clinical and laboratory data of paediatric patients with B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukaemia with prognostically unfavourable features.
Methods: A study of 200 children with B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL) treated with polychemotherapy programmes was conducted. Analysis by sex revealed a statistically insignificant predominance of the group of boys over girls (54%).

Background: Systemic chemotherapy constitutes an indispensable component of breast cancer (BC) management, where therapeutic drug combinations such as anthracyclines, platinum compounds, and taxanes form the cornerstone of standard treatment protocols. Although DNA repair genes are pivotal in cancer susceptibility, their specific roles in mediating acute or chronic toxicity outcomes induced by chemotherapy remain undetermined. Consequently, this study was planned to elucidate the impact of polymorphisms in base excision repair (BER) genes, including XRCC1, XRCC2, XRCC3, APE1, and hOGG1, on treatment response and toxicity outcomes in BC patients undergoing paclitaxel and doxorubicin-based chemotherapy within an Indian population.
