Porphyrins appended with four rigid hydrogen bonding motifs on the meso positions were synthesized and self-assembled into a cofacial cage with four complementary bis(decyl)melamine units in dry solvents. The hydrocarbon chains on the melamine mediate the formation of nanofilms on surfaces as the solvent slowly evaporates.

Distinct role of primate DLPFC and LIP in hierarchical control of learned saccade sequences.

iScience

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Brain Functional Genomics (Ministry of Education), East China Normal University, Shanghai 200062, China.

Learned action sequences are suggested to be organized hierarchically, but how the various hierarchical levels are processed by different cortical regions remains largely unknown. By training monkeys to perform heterogeneous saccade sequences, we investigated the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP) in sequence planning and execution. The electrophysiological recording revealed that sequence-level initiation information was mostly signaled by DLPFC neurons, whereas subsequence-level transition was largely encoded by LIP neurons.

Hierarchical braking accurate control of electrohydraulic composite braking system for electric vehicles.

ISA Trans

January 2025

School of Mechanical Engineering, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, Hangzhou, China. Electronic address:

For the electrohydraulic composite braking system, the general total braking force calculation strategy frequently ignores the resist forces, thereby cannot track the braking intention of driver perfectly. Moreover, the torque allocation process reduces the control reliability and energy recovery effect. In this research, a novel hierarchical braking accurate control (HBAC) algorithm is designed to achieve both the control accuracy and the ideal energy recovery efficiency.

Chemically Triggered Reactive Coacervates Show Life-Like Budding and Membrane Formation.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Institute of Advanced Materials (INAM), Universitat Jaume I, Castelló de la Plana 12071, Spain.

Phase-separated coacervates can enhance reaction kinetics and guide multilevel self-assembly, mimicking early cellular evolution. In this work, we introduce "reactive" complex coacervates that undergo chemically triggered self-immolative transformations, directing the self-assembly of the reaction products within their matrix. These self-assemblies then evolve to show life-like properties such as budding and membrane formation.

Quantifying the configurational complexity of biological systems in multivariate 'complexity space'.

J R Soc Interface

January 2025

Milner Centre for Evolution, Department of Life Sciences, University of Bath, Bath BA2 7AZ, UK.

An increasing number of evolutionary studies seek to quantify the morphological complexity of organisms, particularly those comprising serially homologous elements at different hierarchical levels of organization. Numerous operational frameworks have been proposed for doing this, but most focus on one or multiple conflated aspects of what is really a multidimensional concept. Here, we advocate the use of 'complexity spaces': multidimensional spaces defined by different vectors of complexity.

Resting-state microstate dynamics abnormalities in children with ADHD and co-occurring sleep problems.

Sleep Med

January 2025

Peking University Sixth Hospital, Institute of Mental Health, Beijing, China; NHC Key Laboratory of Mental Health (Peking University), National Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders (Peking University Sixth Hospital), Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Objectives: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder often experience sleep problems, exacerbating symptoms, and cognitive deficits. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying such deficits remained unclear. This study aims to use resting-state microstate analysis to investigate the neurophysiological characteristics in children with ADHD and sleep problems and explore whether neurophysiological abnormalities are associated with sleep problems.
